One thing about the show I didn't like were the extended dream sequences for some of the later episodes. I'm like "Just get to the point already". I don't need to spend 20 minutes or more for certain episodes to see weird dream stuff. I disliked those episodes too.

I have wanted to watch The Sopranos for years and just recently finally decided to dive in. I'm about six or seven episodes into the first season, and I gotta say I'm not that impressed. It's okay, but not mind-blowingly good. The first season seems a little amateurish to be honest. The clips I've seen on YouTube make the show seem so much better. Is the first season a weaker one? I don't even know if I am going to bother with it after the first season. Imho it didn't age well. I loved it back in the day, but character like Janice threw me off when I wanted to re-watch it. But it also has brilliant moments. Pine Barrens is one of my favorite episodes: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pine_Barrens_(The_Sopranos)It's even the second highest rated episodes of the show...I just looked it up and was quite surprised. www.imdb.com/list/ls059696630/ Regarding the Pine Barrens episode - I've just finished watching season 3 and realised we never got a resolution to what happened - unless I missed something? Did the Russian live or die?

I can hardly remember it! I didn't think about that Russian after it.
The plot hole that i thought about was the hidden money in the house? The mother's money? Janice was supposedly looking for it and then they dropped it.
The Russian and the mother's money - are never resolved? I just finished season 3.

I like it a lot, although I have to admit I only started watching it because it aired on free tv in my country. It has a lot of filler though and some really annoying supporting characters. Tony's sister was probably the worst. I also think that as it went on positive reviews began to reflect on the show and the writers started thinking themselves smarter than they actually were. It also led to some people expecting too much of the show. I mean the finale came with such high expectations that there was no way it was going to fulfill them. Yea Janice was one of the big character that I literally couldn’t stand on a rewatch. She’s just so scummy and I can’t think of literally any aspect of her personality that I like. Like, the show has a million scumbags...but most of them have redeemable qualities that make them entertaining or even likeable at times. Janice is one that pretty much up to her last scene I wanted to get run over by a bus. I just finished season 2 and I hate her so much. I hope she gets what she deserves in season 4. If she doesn't, I'll be very disappointed.

I just finished season 3 and love the show. I think it's fantastic. Yes, it has it share of filler episodes, I especially didn't like the dream ones, and I wanted a resolution for the Pine Barrens episode, but overall the characters are great. A lot of people are put off by the constant violence but that was a part of being a mobster. What makes this different is seeing another side to them - how they live their family lives and interact with friends, etc. It shows us that normal looking and acting people can be monsters. I love Tony - he's the best character on the show. I hate Janice with a passion! The kids are annoying though.

Regarding the Pine Barrens episode - I've just finished watching season 3 and realised we never got a resolution to what happened - unless I missed something? Did the Russian live or die? They never answered it. B The best theory I could offer: he managed to survive, made it somehow back home (the stolen car with the money), but his brain was toast enough that he can't remember the last 24 hours or even how he got home. He had called Slava, who took care of him (might attribute it to his alcohol abuse) and got him away from New York because he had no idea who and why shot at his friend - if his caused had been justified or not...like I said: the alcohol. I guess Pauli (Toni) never complained about the stolen money or the car...and if he (Sergey?) had no idea how he got home, it might have ended up in a parking lot of a towing service (=> unpaid tickets). That would explain how the car with the money was gone, but also why Slava never went at war with Tony. Maybe he even had slight idea but was also thinking: "Sergey and his habits when he is drunk. I guess he must have had a fair part in it, and Tony means big business to me. And Sergey does not tell me anything." I will do nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- They, the creators of the show, thought it gave it a nice mystery touch, I think it is was a cop-out.

I watched about half of the first season, and it was alright but didn't live up to the hype IMO. With some people saying the first season was amateurish, I may go back to it one of these days.

With some people saying the first season was amateurish, I may go back to it one of these days. it was not amateurish by any means at that time i dont think. its just been too long and visuals of our every day tv cinematography changes so much, especially with all the Netflix productions etc. I think last 5-10 years really changed the way we view whats "quality tv" and SPOILT us a lot. but it does get "better" in that sense as the seasons go on, or rather more resembling of what we are used to now. i would recommend to give it another watch. the show is fairly complex and i would even say complicated (the internal relationships and motivations and all the changes within the family and their businesses and partnerships etc, so it might take a bit more attention and time to really get into it. What i struggled with the most was how similar all the guys looked to me. It took me FOREVER to differentiate Paulie from Silvio (which seems silly now but thats the truth), not to mention learning all the other names and faces. I cant wait until its 4-5 years from now and I will be able to rewatch it again.

Like all first season shows, the show 'played nicely'. Like how placid knots landing and Melrose Place were their first seasons.

I just finished watching the series, I have to wait until I reasonably forget it before I can rewatch. Did the same with Breaking Bad. I cannot rewatch drama shows while remembering them, it takes away too much for me. But 4 years or so should do the trick.

The pleasure of the viewing years later is almost as good, and in some ways even better thats the first time. because while you do know the ultimte result, you still forgot eough to be surprised about something each episode, but you have enough time and mental power to focus on different things than before and discover a lot of new details.

Agreed. I'm on my 4th watching of The Wire. Even though I know what's coming, it's still good.
Only problem, I'll be saying "a'rite" instead of "alright" for a few days

Yeah I picked up a lot of Sopranos slang as well. Just waiting for my opportunity to say "what, you wanna get cute with me?" and better yet "dont be cunty"
