Why wouldn't they? Her name is still on all of those movies. It's not like the general public is overflowing with Lauren Shuler Donner groupies who follow what she has for breakfast every morning. Keyword in that weak excuse is "quietly."

Actuals came in lower, $136.57 million. This movie can't catch a break.
It might not even make $300 million yet. Domestically this could go under $75 million.

I gotta think it AT LEAST makes more than Fan4stic did right? That made $56,117,548 domestically. I'd guess Dark Phoenix ends around the 60-65 range. That's even a maybe considering my theater in a small town won't even bother playing it. I'm assuming it's not the only one as they play movies that will make them the most money.

If it does what's supposedly the average for a film in this range for it's Cinemascore it should do around $88-89m domestically or if it is as front loaded as most X-Men films are and falls into the 40% range for opening weekend it'll end up around $81.5m range, $80m seems like a safe bet as it would really need to have no legs to only do $60-65m.

I don't follow box office numbers that much so I was just guessing. I was assuming they'd probably be in the $10 mill range next weekend and then down to $5 mill and so on. I'm just curious to know now since (at least mine) small town theaters aren't carrying the film at all how much it'll effect the total. Wouldn't be HUGE because they're small towns but still. This is the first time for me that a movie the size of what an XMen movie is hasn't been here opening weekend.

Oh it'll definitely make more than Fantastic Four. It'd have to have some of the worst legs in the history of movies to do worse than that. X-Men Apocalypse had a 2.38x multiplier. If this had the same then it'd finish with only $78 million but because of the reception, that theatres will drop it faster and the competition, I don't see how it could make that amount.

$145,035,728 so far.
Jesus Christ I can't believe this is happening to an X-Men movie. The general audience apparently don't give a fuck about it.

I would've seen Endgame again but it was a later showtime and a three hour film. As it was I ended up enjoying Dark Phoenix more than I thought I would, but only because my expectations were incredibly low and I knew going in it was going to be the story from the comics.

I am actually surprised it didn't do worse, if Endgame didn't run out of gas when it did or Godzilla had been a hotter ticket Dark Phoenix could have easily been a much bigger failure, they actually lucked out when you think about it.

The movie just dropped 30% on Thursday following a 46% drop of Wednesday.
In comparison the other three movies above it dropped 0-5%.
X-Men Apocalypse was itself very front loaded and that only dropped 34% and 17% on Wednesday and Thursday.
Edit
Oh it gets worse.
"Fox/Disney’s Dark Phoenix is dropping from the sky in weekend 2 with $7.6M in 6th, -77% with a 10-day total of $50.3M."
A 77% weekend drop? Less than $8 million for a second weekend for an X-Men movie? Good god that's terrible. There's only been one movie in history that's opened in 3,000+ theatres and had a drop that bad and that's Friday the 13th which at least makes sense because it capitalised on opening on a Friday the 13th.

All that is left for this film is to fall into an utter oblivion once ‘Toy Story 4’ appears.

It’s a bit more complex than that. I think Logan proved that audience still cared about the X-Men and that came out several months after Apocalypse. Not mention the Wolverine movies before that wasn’t too hot. - Last Minute Marketing Push: Months before Disney bought the studio the Hollywood Reporter talked to a Fox marketing exclusive and was told that most of the marketing team was fired during the merger, leaving the movie largely more unpromoted than it should up. This movie didn’t get a serious marketing push until Disney officially took over a little over a month before release. I have seen a few people say that they did know this came out on June 7th, which brings me to my next point: - Changing Release Date From February To June After The Trailer Dropped: This had to confuse a lot of people about when this was going to release. Not to mention it creates bad buzz. - Released At The Wrong Time: Just like in 2016, summer films are cannibalizing each other as it’s a very competitive time. Even Secret Life of Pets 2 a sequel to a well-received film that opened with 100 million dollars(ending with a total of 800 million) opened with less than half of that number. And it’s been said by the Hollywood Reporter and Deadline it was not made to be a summer film but an off-season movie. So naturally it was going to get buried. - The Final Product Is Mediocre: Word is that Fox panicked and trimmed the movie down to under 2 hours to get more screenings. Resulting in a film that feels rushed, too short, and feels like parts were missing. Combined with the fact that this was marketed as the final film and X-Men’s greatest battle people are going to judge this harshly. Word of mouth isn’t going to be great.

Not shocked this film is a big bust but I am shocked just how big of a bust it is. It being even mentioned in the same breath as Fan4stic is a dumpster fire.
