In terms of cultural relevance, I suppose. People seem to be talking quite a bit about the movie, and it’s not even out yet. The people who have seen it have been discussing how so much of the film mirrors today’s society, and there have been back and forth arguments on whether or not that’s a good thing. The words “scary”, “haunting”, and “disturbing” have all been used to describe the film so far. Ugh! Whenever Hollywood claims a movie is "mirroring today's society" it usually only mirrors their own biases. And it means future generations probably won't be able to connect with it.

In terms of financial success which isn't the same as quality. Box office tells you how much people liked it. No it tells you how much people spent on it, it doesn't even tell you properly how many people actually saw it, Avatar earned almost $1b more than it should have based on average ticket prices at the time due to forcefully pushing it into 3D & IMAx screenings rather than regular ones, the box office can easily lie in that regard.
Whats a better indicator is a box office run, if a film is heavily front loaded it means most people saw it with limited to no quality feedback, they saw the marketing and went in because they thought it would be good, BVS for instance was heavily front loaded and most people did not like it, or do you want to argue more people liked BVS than they did every MCU film pre Phase 3 except IM3 & The avengers films?
Box Office is better at gauging interest not quality, it's the ever increasing average box office for any MCU movie that indicate how much people like them, because every year for several years now Marvel are increasing how much the make per film on average, but that's not based on any single film really but the brand as a whole imo.

Then my stance that "Captain Marvel" is a well-liked movie still holds, because it had a great run and consistently blasted past every ceiling set for it week after week.

Personally I found CM to be kind of hollow, it had all the right ingredients but none of the soul that make other MCU films work for me, and I found it kind of bland, but that's just me and how I felt about the film, if you like it you like it, I am not going to try and change your opinion, unless you bring up specifics you thought made it great and they are the issues I have with the film, in which case a debate may ensue but that's the point of these boards after all.

Friends, People, Guys... Please, let's behave here. The thread is interesting and I want to keep contributing to it. However, if it get deleted of locked everything good in it will be lost. Don't let the butthurt of some people make you lose your temper. The war is over as weirdraptor said before, and we cannot rub anything or discuss anything if we are not here, if the thread is not here. Don't let them provoke you, that's what they want. We can discuss and argue with class as demonstrated thousands of times in knowhere.

2016, when Captain America: Civil War beat out a film that put cultural icons like Batman and Superman together on the silver screen for the first time. As with most of us, Shazam was easily better than Captain Marvel so it wasn't "owned". A few users on V2 don't make up "most of us". The box office different speaks volumes about what a silent majority thinks. Welcome back, weirdraptor. Box office performance is irrelevant when it comes to a film's entertainment quality. So many of today's masterpieces either flopped or didn't make as much money at the box office. I think Shazam didn't do well as say Aquaman because his character isn't that largely known to most of the general public and its release was sandwiched between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame. Whereas, Captain Marvel is not a household name either, but audiences trust the MCU brand so they showed up to see it.

The manufactured "controversy" created by sexist trolls was stupid the day it started. I liked Captain Marvel, and while Larson was good in the role, I didn't feel too drawn to her character as I did with Iron Man or Captain America. Everything else was decent especially Goose the "flerken" who stole the show.

Especially not in Captain Marvel's case where she smashed past every ceiling and blockade the world predicted, week after week. She was supposed to tap out well under a billion, and then didn't. She was supposed to be gone from theaters by "Endgame." She wasn't. That's not irrelevant. That's definitive proof she had a steady viewership that liked her. Period.
