I was just watching the highlights of the Ireland vs New Zealand match. At the 4-minute mark, when the score was still 0-0, there is a play where an Irish player intercepts a pass with one hand, the ball drops to the ground, he picks it up, starts running with it, but a penalty is called. Would somebody please explain why? You can only intercept a pass if you manage to keep the ball in your control? Is that it? Did the ball travel forwards when he hit it? If so that’s called a knock on and is deemed an infringement. news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/rules_and_equipment/4204144.stm

To be fair - it’s a good England side but a pretty ordinary Wallabies side. Actually, lets get it right in terminology, this is a "very good" England side, drilled by a very shrewd Oz coach. Shouldn't be enough to halt the AB Machine, but if AB are not at their best and England are at theirs, then it's a different story.

Would somebody please explain why? You can only intercept a pass if you manage to keep the ball in your control? Is that it? Rugby Union (as opposed to Rugby League) has this one weird rule that states that a player, when intercepting a pass, must attempt to “catch” the ball. Merely putting your arm in the way is deemed not an attempt to catch the ball. This is a penalty, rather than the more obvious knock on if the ball is propelled forward. Personally, I reckon it’s a completely stupid rule.

England will need a lot more possession and territory to beat NZ. Against Australia England made about a hundred more tackles and spent most of the game defending. NZ won't be as wasteful in attack or as easily caught out on the counter attack.

Well, Carl got his close game. Wales by a point against a 14 man France. Will get destroyed by the Springboks in the semi final though. Not a great performance from the winners.

Yeah, wasn’t really a classic though. Ntamack missed a couple of very easy kicks in the first half. It’s his fault France lost (along with the elbowing numptie.)

To be fair, it was 2 shit quarter finals. Wales were lucky, but France didn’t deserve to win either. They had the game in their keeping and let it slip. Overall though, there was some very shoddy defence that would have the Springboks licking their lips. Japan v South Africa went as per the script, with South Africa and their big green machine numbered 1-8 simply bulldozing the hapless Japanese.

To be fair, Saffers were off their best, particularly in the first half. I still think that they can test the All Blacks with an 80 minute performance. Their best is as good as anyone. Wales, not so much. That was a grinding win and an unconvincing one. They don't get close without the red card.

Typical French rugby, imploded again. still can't believe they screwed up their own scrum to hand Wales the try to nick the game.

How could he have possibly thought that this would be acceptable?

Emgland are home! Great win. Just completely put the All.Blacks off their game with some ferocious defence. If not for a pretty random poor line out deep in their own half, England would have shut out NZ tonight.
Before everyone coronates England, Springboks are a bloody good team and their best is as good as England's.

Best England performance I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen the All Blacks to be made to look so ordinary. Underhill, Curry and Itoje in particular were immense.

Great game. England far and away the better side.
First time NZ have been scoreless at H/T in 28 years. Should really have been scoreless at F/T but for a terrible line-out.
Very pleased for Engerland!
Will support them against SA but I'll be cheering Wales if they make the final.
