There are qualities about a movie that go beyond one's own tastes. David Lynch movies aren't necessarily my thing, and I can't say I love any of Stanley Kubrick's movies save for Dr. Strangelove, but to not be able to recognize the individual merits of each of their films and understand why they're considered great speaks to not really understanding the art form itself.
Being polarizing doesn't mean anything more than people walk away with wildly different feelings regarding the movie. Something about the movie just didn't connect with a person, or it really connected with someone else.
I agree...
I don't understand why so many people either Love or Hate certain films... "It Was TOTAL Garbage", for Example... Seriously? Why does it have to be ALL or NONE?... "Shades Of Grey", People, "Shades Of Grey"... Why can't you find it in yourself to reach an opinion about a movie that is somewhere in the middle?
Take "Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom", for example... There's a discussion about which of Spielberg's directed films are your least favorite. A trick question if you ask me... I replied I had mixed feelings about that film. It is my least favorite of the Indiana Jones films. Why?... I didn't care for the story involving the strange "heart ripping out of a body" cult, and the rest of the film was just too "creepy".... However, on the other hand, Spielberg shot the film beautifully, and succeeded in creating a film, that did give me, the "creeps"... But, that's just not the experience I want to have when watching an Indiana Jones adventure... And yet other people do!
Just because I didn't like the story, Why should I blame Spielberg for expertly doing his job, when I don't believe anyone else could have done THAT task better?
Another Film, "Easy Rider", also falls into the "Grey Area" for me... I don't care for the story, or the characters... But I love the cinematography and the music.
And yet, Another film, "Suicide Squad"... is just the same. I loved everything about it, except for the story, and those pathetic Characters.
I'm sure if I thought about it, I could come up with many other films, that I have seen, that fall into that "Grey Area"... Of There is at least something about the film that I either enjoyed, or appreciated... or I could at least understand why so many others enjoyed the film , or disliked it...
I just can't think of any films that are either one way or another, "Totally", as some people like to say... In my opinion, making such a comment, says more about the person who is watching the film, than the film itself.
