Not the process of dying, but the state of no longer existing?
This is even for people who believe in an afterlife. If it was proved that there is no such thing as an afterlife and that death is that you simply cease to exist in every way, does that frighten you?

Nothing scares me more than the idea of eternal nothingness. Everytime I think about it I freak out.

No, it doesn't frighten me. I've known all along that my stay here was never meant to be permanent.

Nothing scares me more than the idea of eternal nothingness. Everytime I think about it I freak out. I find it sad, but it doesn't scare me. Non-existence means no more worries, no more boredom, no more loneliness, no more sadness etc. and I find that rather refreshing.

I'll worry about being dead when I'm dead. Asking what comes after death is like asking what's further north than the North Pole.

It does but look at the likely alternative. You live on a planet storing all your uber-long term memories around a red dwarf while the universe slowly decays and unless there's another universe you can go to, it's really a choice between not existing and existing with pretty much nothing around.

That is usually what people believe or hope for. That you will be reborn or awaken in a meta-universe or "heaven" etc. There is also the idea that everything just keeps repeating over and over for eternity. That once you die, you will be reborn as yourself again once everything is rebooted so to speak and you will live the same exact life again.

Then why get your undies in a twist about it? My undies aren't in a twist about anything. I am just interested in what other people think.

Okay, I've thought about it for years, and here's what I think. If physical death = nonexistence, we'll never know it. I'll be out of my pain. You can't have pain without first having existence, yes?

Happy to be of service. Yes, I think you did. You gave your honest thoughts on the matter and that is all I am interested in here.

That's the gist of it with the first one I'm sure, but I've never met anybody who thinks that they'll live the exact life again, but rather a different sort of life through reincarnation. The latter sounds to me like the movie K Pax as that's the only place I've heard that idea brought up.

You have a very good point but what about the decay of quality of life that nearly everybody experiences before death, like memory loss, slowing reflexes, and the feeling you get that you're about to be no more?
