I personally think they are. People STILL treat these movies like they are some of the greatest films in cinema history when they were mediocre at best.
Talk about an extremely pretentious trilogy about comic book superhero that dresses like a bat, drives a batmobile and fights crime that took the source material WAY TOO SERIOUSLY.

A solid, if imperfect, comic book superhero trilogy overall.

Should have had Goku in them he would have taught Nolan to chill the fuck down or chill the fuck out.

The first two were good, the third was a boring, bloated mess. Interestingly enough so were the third films for Xmen and Spider-man.

That depends... Is The Dark Knight Rises the 71st greatest movie of all time?

No. Starting to get underrated, if anything, recently.
The pendulum always swings the other direction. We’ve seen this with the Prequels (bad to good reception) and now TDK trilogy is doing the same (good to bad), albeit to a much lesser extent.

Yes and no. Begins and Rises I say are overrated but The Dark Knight is excellent.

In what alternate dimension are Chris Nolan's Batman movies starting to get a bad reception? Ever since Dunkirk’s great reception in 2017 the film snobs and popcorn CBM crowds merged to start bashing Nolan incessantly. Tenet took the brunt of that hate, but it’s moved to the rest of his filmography too. I’ve seen them called overly self-serious melodrama (just as the OP did), right wing reactionary trash, fascist garbage, sexist, and poorly shot police procedurals - among other things.

Slightly overrated?: Maybe (they’re not the best thing since sliced bread, but too many think they are) Pretentious?: Slightly (Nolan tends to have too much exposition, but it’s elevated by the actors and the mood) Mediocre?: No (There’s way too much effort that goes into these that comes across on-screen. Not to mention the attempt to maximize practical effects over CGI is always welcome) Too serious?: No way (There are serious themes, to be sure, but I remember humorous moments from all 3. If you want too serious look at Snyder’s MOS and BVS) My #1 version of Batman?: No (While I enjoyed this trilogy from a filmmaking perspective, the most complete version of the Bat mythos is Bruce Tim’s animated series.)

Something about Dunkirk made people turn on him for some reason. I don't know why. I mean, I can get hating or disliking it as a movie, but what is so offensive about it? It's a 107 minute war-thriller without an ounce of controversy around it.

I have sort of but kinda forgiven Nolan for Dunkirk in a sort of kinda way.

Amen. TDKR didn't even feel like it was a part of the same universe. Probably Nolan's worst film. Really? How so? The story made no sense; the President is involved in a Batman story; the scale of everything was taken up ten notches (exploding football fields and nuclear bombs?) when, if anything, it should've been smaller and more personal. The studio had to convince Nolan to make the film in the first place, and it really shows. The entire 'plot' to TDKR completely undermines and destroys what was one of the all time great movie endings in the final moments of TDK. Begins and TDK are incredible films, I simply pretend TDKR never happened. It's poorly written garbage, it's obvious Nolan had lost interest in the subject matter.

No. Batman Begins is the best superhero film ever made.
