8/10. Redesign the Deviants (they’re ugly and bland), make the Eternals’ powers less derivative of other heroes (Superman, Flash, Quicksilver) and make Cersei less dull and you’ve got a top five MCU movie. As is it’s a top ten. Please tell me you wrote "Sersi" like that on purpose. 😂 There's an unspoken rule in superhero fiction. If you create a team, it's not that big of a deal if each of the members' powers aren't very original, as long as it doesn't feel like this is team is directly copying another one.

It’s so blatant that Superman is actually mentioned… in a Marvel movie!

Yeah, Chloé Zhao said in an interview that "Man of Steel" was a big inspiration when making this movie. When Ikaris showed up, I thought "He reminds me of Homelander from "The Boys," except he's a good guy." You can imagine my reaction after the plot twist.

Especially dumb since Vision, who did exist in this universe, also flies and shoots lasers out his eyes and whatever.

For those of you who've watched it, how do you rank Eternals against Black Widow and Shang Chi?

Mentioning Superman was so fucking stupid. Everyone saw the parallel we didn’t need it spelled out. If you make a visual reference to another movie without any acknowledgement, viewers will accuse you of plagiarism. Especially dumb since Vision, who did exist in this universe, also flies and shoots lasers out his eyes and whatever. But Vision wasn't a brunette white hunk. For those of you who've watched it, how do you rank Eternals against Black Widow and Shang Chi? I prefer those other two to this one, but in the end, I like all three.

For those of you who've watched it, how do you rank Eternals against Black Widow and Shang Chi? Eternals was a lot better. Shang Chi and Black Widow were the epitome of what some call “cookie cutter”. They were two of the MCU’s most generic movies while Eternals was far more unique in every respect. The latter is better on the visuals alone.

Viewers would accuse them of plagiarism? No one is that stupid. Beings can fly in the comic book world regardless of company. I don't think Superman was mentioned because of plagiarism but because they were trying to do Deadpool comedy.

Were you guys aware that in the comics several Deviants are actually fully fledged characters with personalities all their own? In this movie they were just... beasts. Meh.

Watched this last night, and I have to say I don't understand why the critics are bashing this movie so hard. It doesn't have the raw enjoyability of the best MCU movies nor does it have the buzzy energy of even their worse ones, but it was a beautiful film. Don't know that I'd rank it anywhere close to the top of the MCU but it's definitely above average. Definitely better than Black Widow or IM2 or Thor TDW or CM and others like them. It certainly does not deserve the rotten score it got.
I think what hurt it the most was a lackluster performance by their lead character. I'm normally a fan of Gemma Chan in her other movies but she was just plain bland in this movie. I found myself wishing Angeline Jolie had been cast as Sersi instead as I feel like she would have brought a far better nuance to the character. Madden was great as Ikaris though, thought he perfectly captured the tortured persona of Ikaris.
Fight scenes were great and it packed an oomph that's a bit more reminiscent of DCEU movies. Though like DCEU movies, I do wish they were shot with a bit more light. There were multiple characters so they obviously couldn't all be give a lot of development, but they did shine in whatever screentime was given to them. In fact, this movie showed that you can have decent development even when introducing an entire ensemble of heroes... unlike what the Fox-men movies did.
My only other nitpick is the humor. The jokes themselves were decently funny on their own (unlike some other MCU movies) but the problem was that they felt out of place in such a somber movie like this. I was getting tonal whiplash from all the times they dropped a joke in a middle of a clearly heavy scene.

I knew that, but I don't think it hurts the story. But in the movie it was a team of immortal superheroes fighting a bunch of wild animals, more or less; for some reason or other. In the comics, its an on-going "secret" war between two races, one perfect, the other wholly imperfect, in order to protect humanity throughout history, and not only to protect them from being killed, but also from being genetically manipulated and steered in the wrong direction. None of that is really in the movie. Instead, Kingo is a Bollywood star, an immortal woman thinks she's a little girl, and Ikaris - the hero of the whole thing, is turned into the villain. (and by the way, what a waste of Angelina Jolie in a completely underwritten role!) I know I'm quibbling, if they had just stayed closer to the ideas in the comics I think they would have had a much more interesting movie, instead of making it about immortals making human jokes. Still, I did like the movie. I'm just thinking about how it could have been better.

Still, I did like the movie. I'm just thinking about how it could have been better. Wait... There's a difference between criticizing an adaptation for making bad changes and criticizing an adaptation for the mere fact it has changes. Which one are you doing? In the comics, some of the Eternals thought they were human because they couldn't remember the past. The discovery of the truth was structured similarly to pretty much any super-hero origin story you can think of. I don't think that would've made for a more interesting movie. Same with making everyone either a clear-cut hero or a clear-cut villain. The Deviants here have no personality because the goal isn't to defeat them. The goal is to stop what Arishem had planned... except that Arishem has a logical reason to want to do that (hence why the heroes have to debate about it first). Similarly, Ikaris struggles with his decisions and ultimately betrays his ideals because he loves Sersi. What's wrong with Kingo being a Bollywood star? I remember Sprite being in the comics too (at least in the Neil Gaiman run), except that she was a boy.

Something just occurred to me. If the Eternals were all synthetic creations, why the hell was Makkari deaf?

Something just occurred to me. If the Eternals were all synthetic creations, why the hell was Makkari deaf? This is one of the first things I said to my friend as we left the theater. A “head canon” explanation could be that the noise from super speed wind resistance caused the impairment or perhaps the Celestials knew that superspeed wind resistance noise would be too loud to endure? But… Basically it’s just the desire of the filmmakers to represent a disabled character without logically explaining it.

Making humanoid deviants who are “genetically inferior” would likely evoke unintentional racist allegories. I think it was smart to avoid it.

I mean, if the Celestials can make Ikaris durable enough to survive traveling from Earth to the Sun in a matter of seconds then I'm pretty sure they could give Makkari working eardrums. At least Sprite being a kid can be excused by the Celestials not understanding the concept of age like we do so don't care how old the body is of the Eternals. But physically impairing one of their Eternals seemed silly. But yeah, this is the filmmakers going for a diversity checkbox. I don't mind as much but it would have been nice for them to at least back it up with some logic. Like maybe Makkari getting seriously injured by a Deviant in their early days or something.
