Tom can do other things. You mentioned Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July but you also have stuff like Collateral and Interview with the Vampire where he shows his range. But Rourke is not right in calling him irrelevant. Tom Cruise is 60 and he's probably the last movie star and he started his career in the 80's. I laughed my head off through Collateral, along with the audience. Found it over-the-top silly. Jamie Fox shined in his part, though. Though Anne Rice publicly apologized for her initially being upset with the casting of Cruise in Vampire, I thought he didn't live up to the part. I think John Malkovich could have killed it. I loved Tom as Lestat, and have never been able to picture anyone else in the role...until now. That's an intriguing choice! Jamie Fox really turned out to be a hell of an actor. I remember him from his In Living Color days. Everyone knew he could do comedy, and then he played he blew me away playing Ray Charles.

I skipped the Ranting parts by Cruise in Magnolia ... once you heard what he had to say the first time, the rest appeared to be just more of the same and F-bombs get boring really really fast !
A Few Good Men provided a great role for him and the lack of romance was certainly a plus, storywise.

I'm glad I got more enjoyment out of "Collateral" than some others did. LOL I loved the small role played by Javier Bardem in this movie, too. Quite powerful and deadly with a quiet voice.

Anne Rice wanted Julian Sands or Rutger Hauer. Both would be solid choices IMO. But I liked Tom Cruise as Lestat. Much better than Stuart Townsend in that god awful movie Queen of the Damned. EDIT: The new Lestat and Louis from the upcoming TV series:

It wasn't a classy thing to say regardless of how much better Rourke or anyone else may be as an actor than Tom Cruise. How can you call him irrelevant when Tom currently has the biggest box office smash of the year? Maybe there is bad blood between them or something.

One has to wonder what Rourke's definition of "relevant" even is.

Timothy Hutton has an oscar and he directed the music video for the song "Drive" by The Cars - by such standards is better than both of them.

I really liked Mickey Rourke back in the day, but he went crazy. Boxing Acting Bitter old man His face got smashed. I get that, but it was also the time away. He lost the intensity from Angel Heart & Johnny Handsome. Then back to Acting. He seems to have felt Acting was inferior to boxing so he's back to the inferior job?

Anyway Tom Cruise is awesome just for Knight and Day.
Whoever didn't find that film all kinds of warm cheese and rainbows must have had a waffle stuck up their butt.

I like the Tom Cruise movies where he changes from a jerk or an inept guy or a cynical guy and ends up well.
Edge of Tomorrow Rainman War of the Worlds

Both are crap actors these days, but at least Rourke could act once. Not sure Cruise ever could. Decent action movie star though.

I like "A Few Good Men" where he changes from a Navy lawyer who settles everything out of court to a Navy trial lawyer.
Jack Nicholson raised the roof on that movie with its most famous scene ("You can't handle the truth!!!"), but I liked Tom Cruise in this, too.

That's so unfair.

Rourke had more talent in his little finger than Cruise has in his whole ancestral line. It’s a shame that Rourke, like many such talented performers, came saddled with a host of self-destructive and self-sabotaging behavior. Like Brando but more so. Whereas Tom, also full of weird tendencies, had his mental issues channeled and forged by a cult. I think Tom Cruise's crazy is what's kept his career going. He's the action star he is because no one sane would do their own stunts like that. I loved him as Lestat and also in Vanilla Sky, which I know isn't a highly regarded film, but I love it. Also Far and Away and Eyes Wide Shut. Really though, he's the ultimate action star and never fails to put the work in for his audience. I'm also in the minority on The Mummy. I didn't think that was the worst film ever, and I'm disappointed The Dark Universe got shelved. I thought Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll was great in his small bit, and I wanted to see what would happen in his film. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Cruise. He does what he does. Vanilla Sky, Lestat and Far and Away were good turns for him (though his accent work is just... hnnnngh... but most audiences don't care too much about that) but I do find the same basic through-line of "super-driven, quiet intensity" follows his every performance. He has very little flexibility but his basic setting makes every role somewhat enjoyable. Rourke, though, in his heyday, was just insanely good. No ego, no shame, what a performer.
