So an actor who plays almost always the same charatcer is criticizing a versatile actor as Tom Cruise with constant sucessful box-offices and even has the aaudacity to call Tom Cruise "irrelevant"...?
The irony...
And I never liked Mickey Rourke. He's a tremendous loser.
Rourke is obviously jealous as let's face it, he's made maybe four good films in his entire career compared to Cruise.
He might have certain point about Tom Cruise playing the same character in every movie. He usually doesn't stray much from the all american hero but he has clearly shown that he's capable of doing more.
That being said: Mickey Rourke wishes he could be as relevant as Tom Cruise is.
For viewers who prefer character actors to packaged blockbuster stars, Tom Cruise isn't high on the list. He did well in a couple films, I think - Magnolia, Born on the Fourth of July - but I'd take "Barfly" over the rest of his stuff. To be fair, I didn't see the latest.

Tom Cruise wishes he had Mickey Rourke's Oscar.
Agree about Cruise not straying from the same part. He took a risk in Magnolia and I think he did well.

Tom can do other things. You mentioned Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July but you also have stuff like Collateral and Interview with the Vampire where he shows his range.
But Rourke is not right in calling him irrelevant. Tom Cruise is 60 and he's probably the last movie star and he started his career in the 80's.

Mickey Rourke was nominated for an Oscar. He never won.
Tom Cruise has 3 nominations. So even in that category, Tom Cruise has done better than him.

I laughed my head off through Collateral, along with the audience. Found it over-the-top silly. Jamie Fox shined in his part, though.
Though Anne Rice publicly apologized for her initially being upset with the casting of Cruise in Vampire, I thought he didn't live up to the part. I think John Malkovich could have killed it.

I’m not the biggest Tom cruise fan, but I thought he killed it when he played Les Grossman in tropic thunder, and as the rock star in rock of ages. You don’t see him doing comedy, and I enjoyed that side of him.

Rourke had more talent in his little finger than Cruise has in his whole ancestral line.
It’s a shame that Rourke, like many such talented performers, came saddled with a host of self-destructive and self-sabotaging behavior. Like Brando but more so.
Whereas Tom, also full of weird tendencies, had his mental issues channeled and forged by a cult.
If anyone should be irrelevent, it's Mickey Rourke's plastic surgeon.
I don't think boxing left much of a face for any surgeon to work on properly.
Cliff Montgomery had a car accident that took much of his good looks away, but it wasn't on purpose. Mickey put his face out there in boxing and made it rough on cameras.

I think Tom Cruise's crazy is what's kept his career going. He's the action star he is because no one sane would do their own stunts like that.
I loved him as Lestat and also in Vanilla Sky, which I know isn't a highly regarded film, but I love it. Also Far and Away and Eyes Wide Shut. Really though, he's the ultimate action star and never fails to put the work in for his audience.
I'm also in the minority on The Mummy. I didn't think that was the worst film ever, and I'm disappointed The Dark Universe got shelved. I thought Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll was great in his small bit, and I wanted to see what would happen in his film.

Cruise is box office bonanza while Rourke is poison and let's be real as its all about the money in Hollywood.
