Peter Debruge's review (Variety) was "fresh" until a couple minutes ago where it changed to rotten? Weird... "While it's not saying much, "Thor: Ragnarok" is easily the best of the three Thor movies - or maybe I just think so because its screenwriters and I finally seem to agree on one thing: The Thor movies are preposterous." Yeah, i came to say the same thing. It stayed fresh for half a day then was changed to rotten. I wonder what that's about.

Who decides why a review is fresh or rotten? Average rating among critics is the best way to go.

It varies for me. I like the humor in Civil War, for example. But the humor in AoU is waaaaay too cutesy for my tastes. I think I'm going to like the humor in Thor Ragnorak, but many reviewers do note that there is almost nothing dramatic in the movie. And it is after all about the end of the freakin universe, so a bit of drama would be nice. You ARE aware that "the end of the universe" can't happen until Infinity War, right? Oh jeez, dude. You know what I mean. I'm talking about Ragnorak! Obviously Thor will prevent it. Did you really think I'm suggesting that Thor 3 actually should end the MCU???

Does a movie need heaps of gags to be considered "unpretentious"? No, just not full of itself and constantly yelling "LOOK AT THE SYMBOLISM! LOOK AT HOW DEEP THIS ALL LOOKS!" the way Nolan and the DCEU films are. WS featured whacked out stuff like the mind of a Swiss Scientist being saved on old 70s computers and flying aircraft carriers. Well, let me elaborate. I'm talking specifically the gag based humor used in Doctor Strange, Thor, Ant Man and GotG. I'm not talking about whacked out stuff or comic bookiness. That's why I used the word "gag". And you always say that other studios are embarrassed of the comics. Well, it is actually movies like DS and Ant Man that are embarrassed- which is why they mock themselves with self depreciating humor. Thats my problem with some of Marvel's more humorous movies. They're too self aware. TDK actually does have lots of humor. It's just more subtle and organic... Much like TWS, TIH, even Iron Man and CW. Only BvS is totally humorless. Lets stop talking in absolutes here. It makes for boring conversation. It's not "humor or pretentiousness". That's a simplistic view. Films can be intelligent and funny. And humor comes in different forms. My opinion is that self awareness in humor can push a film too far into parody territory. And the MCU sometimes comes close to being parody In movies like Ant Man and DS.

Pretty much every other MCU movie used witty humor mostly. That said, it seems Ragnarok will be more into the slapstick kind, and that worries me. The only thing that's stopping me from worrying too much is how all the reviews keep repeating how fun it is.

So many "fresh" reviews are often filled with a lot of criticisms. It's a really dumb oversimplified system.

I guess Ant-man I can see, though it was handled better than DS and GotG2. But I can't remember any in Thor.

But I didn't originally mean slapstick per se. But rather self depreciating humor that comes close to being a parody of its source material. Thor and Ant Man are full of it. There's a lot of winking at the audience as if to say: "Yup, this is silly. We're aware. Wink wink."

Under 20th Century Fox, anything even remotely resembling something "comic book-y" would have been removed altogether.

Certainly good news. I was really kind of worried that this wasn't going to be good at all.
I'm definitely more excited now.

(I'm looking at you, Batman v Superman.)

(I'm looking at you, Batman v Superman.) You clearly lack a nuanced understanding of that masterpiece's hidden depths. They weren't just posing dramatically and navel-gazing. (They were also discussing their moms.)

So all of the freakin powers aren't comic book-y? Besides, what does X Men have to do with this? Why do we have to bring up other franchises anyway?? That's not a defense or even a conversation. Stay on topic please.

You're complaining about the MCU daring to admit its being silly and I'm pointing out that the utterly joyless FoX-Men films do everything in their power to resist embracing their comic book roots. That's the alternate our reality gives us. So take your pick of what you'd rather these films be like. Also, the MCU films are not the Nolan Batman films, so using those as an example is just a moot point. The humor in the MCU is every bit as organic in its own way.
