TFA was the first Star Wars movie in 10 years. There was never any chance that this movie would make the kind of money TFA did. The Empire Strikes back made less money than Star Wars. WRONG--Disney expected TLJ to still make $2 Billion at the box office, just like TFA, but Disney really blew it with this mediocre film--TFA has 88% score on RT Audience, but TLJ is at only 52%!--Still a big hit because, you know, Star Wars, big space battles etc but the audience has voted TLJ the worst Star Wars movie ever made It's currently at only 50% at RT audience rating with +160k reviews. The lowest of the saga films, and lower than the Ewok movies even. Only the Clone Wars movie (a TV pilot) has a lower rating.
It's a shame IMO, most of the audience blame should be shared with TFA and it's badly written mystery boxes. TLJ mostly reaps what that movie saw.

Cue apologist marks: "BUT JEDAN IT MADE A TUN OF DA MUNNIES!!!!1" It did. But like church and state, commercial and artistic merit should be kept separate. For good or for worse, there is not necessarily a clearly defined correlation between those two.

It's at $1.091 billion now, the 19th highest grossing movie ever.
Should go up another 2 places tomorrow and then another 2 the day after that.

$1.108 billion worldwide.
Just missed out on passing Skyfall.
It's not looking to do very well at all in China.

I can’t help but laugh at the desperation of the people who didn’t like or hated the movie in this thread. “19th highest grossing movie of all time? So what? It’s not doing well in China! IT’S A FAILURE!!1! HAHAHAHAHA!1!”

I like when movies i love do well in the box office, but just because there's a better chance that they continue the trend. TLJ just have to make do with maybe 50 million (with luck there) instead of 100... It's still a bad result and it makes me a little sad, but hey it's life innit? In no way it inders my enjpyment of the best SW since ESB.

Well it's not like the underperformance in China is going to affect the series in any way at all.
They'll still continue to make the movies regardless.

Star Wars is an aquired nerd taste in China comparable to Tron here.
Unlike in the West they do not have the nostagic relationship to the SW originals. Without that TFA, a heavily nostalgia-driven vehicle, despite being heavily marketed (they even quasi-removed the "negro" from the official posters) underperformed and allegedly scorched the earth for the franchise. Consequently, R1 even though sporting two famous Chinese actors underperformed worse/flopped. TLJ will not be any different it seems.

When SOLO comes out it will be even more difficult to penetrate the region.

So it's at $1.122 billion now.
Not sure how high it will go, perhaps $1.3 billion? It's definitely going to be the highest grossing movie of 2017 though.

I question if it will even get to $1.2 billion. It was #3 at the domestic box office on Friday. It's struggling in China. And after this week, theaters will no longer be required to screen the movie exclusively in their largest auditoriums.
