Although admittedly the nature of the award isn't as important as who gets nominated these days.

That's what the Best Picture Oscar is for. Movie production. It's the Producers of the movie who go up on stage and accept the Best Picture Oscar.

Pretending that this isn't a ridiculous question meant as troll bait for a moment... Lady Bird and Get Out are both fantastic films, far more worthy of award praise than Wonder Woman. I will never understand the belief that WW will get any Oscar recognition outside of technical. The only one I could potentially see them getting is a Best Director nod and that's a long shot.

No, only the Producers and Executive Producers go up on stage. And when the announcer says "This is the 2nd nomination and 1st win for so-and-so" (or something like that), it's the Producers' names that are announced. Moreover, in THE OFFICIAL ACADEMY AWARDS® DATABASE, prior to 1951, the Best Picture category listed the studio that produced the movie for each nominated movie, but since 1951, the Best Picture category lists the names of the Producers of the movie for each nominated movie.

There is next to zero chance of it getting a best director nomination because there are less spaces. You are right, even if they open the Best Picture category up to 10 spaces, it still wouldn't deserve a nomination. But if "Lady Bird" didn't exist, I 100% guarantee it would get one. Such is the ridiculous climate we are now living in.

There is no way the academy aren't going to have one female directed movie in their Best Picture line up after Natalie Portman bitching at the Golden Globes.

With a PGA nomination for Best Theatrical Motion Picture, Wonder Woman is now a very strong contender for a Best Picture Oscar nomination. With the PGA nomination, Wonder Woman's chances of a Best Picture Oscar nomination have now gone from slim to good. www.denofgeek.com/us/movies/wonder-woman/270041/is-wonder-woman-a-contender-for-best-picture-at-the-oscars

Which brings us back to my thought that if WW is nominated for anything major, it would be Director. Though I agree that the larger field of Best Picture helps the odds.

Greta Gerwig will probably get a Best Director nomination to placate the feminazis anyway.

That is probably just an established protocol. No agendaless academy member who has bothered to watch all the movies will be considering anything other than which movie they think is the best.

It's an insane world. bro. There is no way the academy aren't going to have one female directed movie in their Best Picture line up after Natalie Portman bitching at the Golden Globes. I don’t see why Natalie Portman “bitching” would be a motivating factor for them. Because it brought attention to a all male nominated award, much like how the all white Oscar controversy one year led to a every major award featuring black representation the following year, the all male directed film "snub" will influence how people will vote.
It's not to say it'll earn films unworthy a nomination, but it can prompt people who maybe split between which film they were deciding to vote on to lean towards a more politically motivated response.
The Academy has been on a specific kick the last few years to rehab their image away from being so white, so old and so male, that in a year like the last for them to "snub" female directors would be insane, things like the Oscars are meant to show what Hollywood values, so you'll always see a agenda being pushed when there's a bad image that Hollywood is trying to shake off.

You think it's better to live in a world where women get nominated for awards because they don't have a dick and whine a lot rather than because they actually deserve the nomination? Take some time out and look back over the last 20 years or so and point out to me any woman who was blatantly overlooked in the Best Director or Best Movie categories. Fast forward to 2017 and it's "PC" to think women are entitled to be nominated for awards cause vagina. Ridiculous!
