OT: James Gunn Mega thread

I don't follow celebrities or keep track of their diet, choice of fashion, current whereabouts or thoughts on anything.

That said, I did read James Gunn's website in the early 2000s because, in between saying heinous shit about everything and anyone, Mr. Gunn talked lucidly and passionately about his chosen art form --- writing. His script for the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead deeply impressed this fledgling Death Lord. I wanted to know how he did what he did. (It turns out that the secret was just to sit down and do it).

During those days, he was a real heel and, after a while I thought, nothing will ever become of this dude. Flash forward a few years to Slither, Super and an offer from Disney to direct Guardians of the Galaxy and, I thought --- 50/50 that he makes it through pre-production.

Two hit movies in the series later, and I was still wondering if Disney really knew what they'd got themselves into. Jim was the self-appointed king of nihilistic edgelords. He played for keeps, and every revered institution, sacred tradition and cherished belief you ever held was fair game. He had a lot of pent up anger and resentment.

The problem with the current narrative about him is that it doesn't take into account personal growth. He'd really changed in the intervening years since the first Guardians movie. His vlogs showcased a person who was still edgy and irreverent but, who'd indeed given up on being a shock jock and was deeply grateful for the opportunities he'd received through Marvel.

The work had changed him for the better, he'd always been literate and witty in a teen fart-joke sort of way but, now, on Twitter, he was also very much a three-dimensional person who seemed concerned with the welfare of his fellow man and ready to join the human race.

Tough break Jim, I hope there's a third act for you somewhere down the line.

Thats what a deserves for constantly running his mouth on twitter. If Bryan Singer can get run outta Hollywood on accusations alone, then Gunn should be exhiled permanently.
