while some people that grew up in the 80s and have nostalgia for the time don't tend to agree, it seems most people agree that 80s music is terribly dated. With terrible a terrible use of synthesizers and terrible lyrics that don't mean anything

Yes. Absolutely, but there are some obvious exceptions of course.

You do realize that a wide variety of music was produced during the 80s. You're not idiotically generalizing the music from an entire decade.

dated in the sense that you can instantly tell when that music was produced? yes
dated in the sense that it sounds awful to contemporary ears? yes, in very few cases.
most music produced in the 80s was incredible. Remember that music from the 80s included genres such as rock, thrash metal, heavy metal, death metal, black metal, speed metal, jazz, techno, RNB, funk/disco , soul, power ballads, punk rock, post-punk, avantgarde, synth/wave, new wave, industrial, rap reggae
if anything i would say that rap music e.g is "dated" because 80s rap sounds very "naive" compared to contemporary rap (basically you can just easily tell it's a less-evolved stage of the rap sound where rhyme schemes and rapping is delivered in a less complex way than nowadays). That being said many of those songs are still good, such as "Last night a DJ saved my life" and "Kurtis Blow - The Breaks".
What's funny tho, is that some new rap songs are emulating 80's rap such as the song "DJ 33, The DropStarz - California Flight" where they employ a less complex and more "party oriented" rapping than most contemporary rap songs and the song would fit great in GTA Vice City's WildStyle Pirate Radio without missing a BEAT - meaning, it's hard to tell when that song was even made if you're not a music expert.

Of course.
What burns me is someone referring to "80s music" as if it's a genre and everything produced during that decade sounds the same. Metallica, REM, Men Without Hats, the Meat Puppets, INXS, Slayer, the Cars, the Minutemen, Prince, Kate Bush, Dinosaur Jr., the Hoodoo Gurus, Mekons, the Gun Club, the Police, Cocteau Twins, Butthole Surfers, Talking Heads, etc. are all the same genre because they all happened to make music during the 80s. The OP is an idiot.

It refers to a specific style from a specific era - not unlike how "Classic Rock" doesn't include "classic songs" from, say, 2015.

I get what you're saying. But "classic rock" isn't really a specific style or genre either. Listening to a classic rock station you might hear Pink Floyd and then AC/DC and then the Byrds and then Boston and then Bob Dylan. I know that when people think "80s music" they immediately think synth pop. But the term could also be applied to stuff like Bon Jovi, Guns n Roses, U2 and Run DMC. It's not really any specific style. Maybe it could refer to anything that has distinctively 80s production values such as the booming drums.

80's music was the last original era of music. 90's took from the 60's & 70's. 00's took from youtube. 10's took from the garbage can.
