I watched the Asphalt Jungle and missed the credits--and when this blonde girl shows up I thought: who is this Marylin Monroe type???
Then I saw the end credits.

"People had a habit of looking at me as if I were some kind of mirror instead of a person. They didn't see me, they saw their own lewd thoughts, then they white-masked themselves by calling me the lewd one." - Marilyn Monroe Well she is pretty much right, because we are all a mirror\projection of each other, but she wasn't that sharp to see this and as an attractive movie star, being a sex symbol was part of the pay-off for fame. How else would she be seen, especially when she was posing provocatively? She created her own image and then wanted her cake and eat it too. Yes, I would say that fame is a catch-22.

I agree. Her dumb blonde character image just turns me off, extremely fast, and I never understood why so many others find that trait to be so desireable... There are plenty of other celebs out there with Beauty, Personality, Talent, ETC... and "brains"... that I feel are much more worthy of getting attention from so many fans.

Many words ran through my head trying to describe her, but the one that came closest was FUCKABLE.

She may have been her own worst enemy, but that was a result of the horrific childhood she had to endure, including her dysfunctional mother and childhood sexual abuse by more than one pervert who saw her as easy prey. Her bipolar disorder, likely the result of her childhood trauma, set her on a lifelong self-destructive path. None of those husbands of hers were all that kind to her, either. No matter how successful she may have been in Hollywood, she never really had the world at her feet. There's a recent biography of her, Marilyn Monroe: The Private Life of a Public Icon, that goes into excruciating detail about her sad life. I haven't gotten to it yet, but from reviews of the book, it seems to be superior to most of the other Monroe bios over the years.

I sometimes feel that the people who don’t like Marilyn haven’t seen many Marilyn movies. Many people just know the stereotype/image/popular misconception/whathaveyou.. It’s a bit odd. (But, then, dear Audrey Hepburn, also, is also known mostly [thank God she’s still known] only as a type, not as a person and not as an actress.) Marilyn was a fine and beautiful actress with a very likeable screen presence that, as you say, does come off as adorable. But the people who know her only from the popular conception wouldn’t know that.

Oh, my word—um, well, um, can I have two and an ellipsis?
Ah, Marilyn…

I can see why people would find her characters to be dumb, but I find that her blonde characters always have a very interesting point of view and that they are really not dumb at all, "ditzy" would be a better word. To me, "dumb" would be any character you find in the movie "Gummo". Marilyn's characters all have flights of spirit, and you can't be a dumb person if you have that. But for her fans, Marilyn was magical. She had so much more than beauty, personality and talent. I can't look at anything else when she's on the screen. She's just so lovable to me. There was nobody more effervescent than Marilyn Monroe.

She wasn't fat. She just wasn't a stick, ala Angelina Jolie. If Marilyn had been thin, she would not have been as cute and appealing. Maybe she had a hint of baby fat. She was curvy.

"Slut" is very harsh and purposefully mean and judgmental and, in this case, would have more to do with the person who chose that word than with Marilyn. "Sexy" does not equal "slut". "Sexual" does not equal "slut".

Yes, I would say that fame is a catch-22. It comes with a price and while Monroe appeared to be desired to be seen as something more than just a sex symbol, that is not how she played it out. I doubt she was as vulnerable and naive as many make her out to be, that is just the victim image, but MM appears to have paid the ultimate price and yet the blame gets pushed onto other influences. I really don't buy into that.
She was married thrice over a short period of time, had the world at her feet and yet still couldn't get her head out of the clouds. I don't want to say she was precious, but she was spoiled and privileged and appears to have been her own worst enemy. Frances Farmer was the same as well. That may be true that the almost excessive vulnerability was more part of her image, it is hard to say since Marilyn's image was the biggest part of her. By that I mean that there was something unreal about her. Pauline Kael said that there was a perverse charm about her that all of the MM imitations tried to capture, but Marilyn was the only one who really had it. And Kael was not a fan of hers. Kael also said that she felt that Marilyn would go slack into between wolf calls. I don't know if that's an uncharitable thing to say or not, but it's kind of funny and I can see where Kael was coming from when she made the comment.

Iconicthat's probably what I would go with because if there is one famous female actress damn near everyone has hear of, it's her.
p.s. but with that said... I think she's overrated. but given her image is so built-up, it seems she's kind of in that class that not many can reach as I don't expect many actresses around today to still be remembered as much as she is. kind of like those old days of baseball with Babe Ruth etc are so built-up like there untouchable etc.

Agreed.
but I think what happened to her is sort of like in terms of baseball those players from the old days like Babe Ruth etc etc. like they have this image so built-up, like they are untouchable. or to put that into music... like say The Beatles did in their day etc.
so while I basically agree with you, for whatever reason(which I suspect has something to do with what I said above), the old days just seems to have this overly hyped up iconic image that even though many today beat, they just can't seem to grab that level of iconic status etc.
