I really don’t think you’re getting what I’m saying, pennypacker . Your opinion is valid. Of course. I still don’t think he implied that. But you can ask him for clarification. He could ask, but the snarky "It’s incredible that it’s difficult for you to wrap your brain around that concept. " was un-needed and uncalled for, especially when my post was not aimed at anyone in particular. My dance card for dealing with the manners deficient is filled right now and there is a long waiting list.
I like Marilyn Monroe and have admired her work forever. If others don't … their loss ! -30- More passive aggression. That's all bullshit because you specifically commented on the "meh". I was the only one who said that. You wanna play victim, as you often do, go ahead. But condescending and passive aggression is a pattern from you. And I'm not the only one who sees it. "Manners deficient" is absolutely fucking hilarious coming from you.

I sometimes feel that the people who don’t like Marilyn haven’t seen many Marilyn movies. Many people just know the stereotype/image/popular misconception/whathaveyou.. It’s a bit odd. (But, then, dear Audrey Hepburn, also, is also known mostly [thank God she’s still known] only as a type, not as a person and not as an actress.) Marilyn was a fine and beautiful actress with a very likeable screen presence that, as you say, does come off as adorable. But the people who know her only from the popular conception wouldn’t know that. I've only seen 6 Marilyn Monroe movies: Niagara Gentlemen Prefer Blondes How to Marry a Millionaire There's No Business Like Show Business The Prince and the Showgirl Some Like It Hot I would say you really only need to see "The Seven Year Itch", then. Other than that, you've seen Marilyn's best. I do think "Some Like It hot" is over-rated a bit (not her performance, but the movie itself, which I thought was good, but not great), but then I think that "The Prince and the Showgirl" is under-rated. "Bus Stop" is good and MM is good in it, but ultimately, it's a sad little movie and I really prefer Marilyn in comedies. "The Misfits" was very dreary, and I don't think that Marilyn was close to her best.

For those who say over-rated .. it's rather like saying a rose is overrated.Especially true for those who have only seen a very few of her films.
A legend does not became a legend by accident. She was a legend even before her untimely death. Oh, I like that!

“Meh”. I realize she has a rather dedicated fan base, and has for decades but I’ve always thought she was a rather mediocre actress and honestly kinda bland physically. Not unattractive by any means, but I wouldn’t look twice. But that’s just me... If you wouldn't look twice, it's because you didn't take a good look the first time around...

I started off respectful. It’s a shame others are incapable of it. Not that it matters, it was all over yesterday.

No you’re just passive aggressive. That’s sooo much better. I’ll post how I please, pictures and all. How dare you not share the same star worship. I’d like to point out, as I pointed out to Penny, that I don’t want to criticize anyone who doesn’t agree with me on liking or disliking an actor or actress. That’s not what I’m going for, I don’t think that’s what any of us were/are going for, and I really have to say that I think some of the people here don’t understand that. I genuinely feel concerned about writing my opinion here for fear that I’ll be criticized for saying that I’m attacking someone for not liking Marilyn Monroe. Geez.

I guess I should’ve known better, but it wasn’t indicitated anywhere that I can find that all comments had to positive. But now I think it’s digressed entirely too much and everyone should continue on with the thread and be respectful to others opinions - good or bad.

I agree. Her dumb blonde character image just turns me off, extremely fast, and I never understood why so many others find that trait to be so desireable... There are plenty of other celebs out there with Beauty, Personality, Talent, ETC... and "brains"... that I feel are much more worthy of getting attention from so many fans. She actually hated that image. She wanted meatier roles, but Hollywood had her type cast. She even started her own production company, something unheard of in that era.

Share your opinions and if you don't like what you are hearing and it upsets you, just ignore it, instead of adding fuel to the fire. Speaking of rudeness… Not precious, just honest and respectful, believing that we should all be free to share our opinions. Geez, pal. It’s just a chat thread. Do you really hate Marilyn so much that you’re fine with being rude to the people who do like her?

Do you really hate Marilyn so much that you’re fine with being rude to the people who do like her? So I have pushed a button for calling you precious. That is the image you are painting, even if it is not your intention. I can only call it like I see it.
You are also distorting the point of the opinion to make it all about you. Is this all about seeking attention for some reason?
Fine. I’m precious, whatever. You’re being a goddam jerk. And you’re goddam right that’s rude, after everything you’ve been writing. I’ll tell you what, you’ve pushed my buttons now.

So your point is about rudeness, but you are acting out the same behavior. As I thought, no self-awareness or credence. Grow up! Oh, come on. You’re being a complete jerk, and then you say I lack self-awareness and credence? Wow. I’ll let the people who read this thread come to their own conclusions. You go ahead and rant to yourself about how you hate certain actresses so much that you’ll insult people here. Have fun. I’m not going to be part of it.

She actually hated that image. She wanted meatier roles, but Hollywood had her type cast. She even started her own production company, something unheard of in that era. Well, what she hated and what she ended up doing, only Monroe could take onus for that.
She has been immortalized as a legend and a goddess. That is the image she projected. If she was manipulated, much of that would have been due to drugs and booze as well. If her head wasn't clear, no sympathy from me.
Monroe was also apparently a pain in the derriere to be around. All those that empathize with her may have second thoughts if they were around her for too long. She allegedly bugged the s<>t out of Tony Curtis on Some Like It Hot set because of her un-professionalism, that apparently she wasn't even invited to the wrap up party. Lemmon got along with her though, or so I have read.
She was a train wreck in her personal life. I love her films, and have read a lot about her. To me her story is the ultimate warning that all that glitters is not gold. Being beautiful, being famous...none of it made her happy. Happy is an internal thing and often choice. I will say that Hollywood has a long history of bullying its stars, and it goes back to before Monroe. I think that should be recognized. Most of the people surrounding her only cared about what they could use her for. That's the double-edged sword of fame. She gets misquoted a lot, and I'm not sure she should be considered a role model beyond her ability to go from foster child to famous actress. She truly had a tragic start, but her choices as an adult were the choices of a deeply troubled woman.
