Now six years old, how do you feel about the preliminary entry in the DC Expanded Universe? I'm not much of a fan, but I wouldn't exactly call it a bad film either. It's mostly just average IMO.
Some other thoughts:
- I like that they weren't afraid to toy around with the characters. Clark not being a Daily Planet reporter was certainly a change. And Lois learning his identity like that was a huge departure from canon as well. An African-American Perry White was surprising.
- The special effects were good, but I disliked the way the film-makers designed Krypton. The 1978 film did this much, much better.
- Cavill's Superman looks constantly angry. It's clear Snyder was imitating Batman Begins, but that approach and tone doesn't work as well for the Man of Steel.
- Why re-use Zod? Couldn't they have chosen another member of Superman's rogues gallery? Superman II already handled that character perfectly. I did like the terraforming machines though.
- I miss John Williams' uplifting score.
- The Dad's death was needlessly melodramatic. I prefer how they handled it in the '78 version.
- Superman should NOT have killed Zod. Certainly not intentionally and not in that manner. Poor choice.

I just watched it last night. I thought it was real good but it did have it's flaws. In the other movies when Clark worked at the daily planet you really got to see his character develop and his relationship with Lois develop as well as getting to know the other characters at the Daily planet. You also got to see the struggle with keeping 2 identities, and the relationship between Superman and the people he serves. That was always the heart of the Superman story. I realize they probably didn't want to make it too much like the 1978 movie, but that's also why the character seemed underdeveloped in this movie.
They did do a good job with the flashback scenes of him growing up and all that, but it was a little off-putting the way they kept going back and forth between past and present. The action was great and the story was good. The opening scenes with his parents and on Krypton were awesome. But at the end of the movie, I felt like I really didn't get to know the character of this Superman, Lois Lane, Perry White, or any other character here. The extreme lack of character development really hurt the movie I thought. The Superman/Lois romance didn't work for me either because it wasn't built on in the course of the story. I think the cast did well with what they had to work with though.
But overall I thought it was a real good movie but should've been a lot better.

I like it as much as the Reeve films. It's too bad we likely won't get a proper followup.

It could have been one of the best Superman films ever made, but in the end, it's alright. Zack Synder and David S. Goyer made a bad decision trying to ground Superman into a Batman Begins-esque origin story. That dark approach works best for Batman, but it doesn't work for Superman who is meant to be something humanity should aspire to be. I personally hate the desaturated look of the film and the crash zoom camera effect was overused.
Henry Cavill was well-cast as Clark Kent and Superman, but again because of Synder's direction, he's prevented from being the optimistic Superman we know and love. Everything was well-cast in their roles, although I think Laurence Fishburne was wasted as Perry White. He should play a more prominent character in this universe since he's so good as an actor. Additionally, I did think that Cavill and Amy Adams lacked chemistry with each other and the love subplot wasn't as good as it should have been.
The visual effects were good, and I did like the film's depiction of Krypton. Hans Zimmer's musical score was pretty good. I hated how they depicted Jonathan Kent's death and Superman causing so much destruction in his fight with Zod.

1. I do not like the score at all 2. I don't like how stiff Cavill looks when he flies, his neck is too thick, it looks painful for him to have his head up 3. I don't really care for Zod 4. I don't really like how Costner dies, it's stupid 5. I don't like how they destroy Smallville and then Metropolis 6. I don't like how Superman destroyed that guy's semi truck, a bit disproportionate response I think 7. I like Amy Adams but I don't like her as Lois Lane 8. I like Laurence Fishburne but not as Perry White 9. The overall dark tone of the film brings the film down, despite the attempts at humor 10. I hate the look of Krypton 11. I hate that Lois knows Superman's identity when he gets to the Daily Planet 12. The production values are very good 13. I like Russell Crowe but not as Kal-El 14. I don't mind Costner and Diane Lane but neither were particularly good, either 15. I like Cavill so much more in a film like MI Fallout 16. Antje Traue as Faora was absolutely my favorite part of this film, she was mesmerizing, I wanted to see more of her 17. The Superman suit looked terrible 18. I don't mind that Superman killed Zod but I do mind how he did, it didn't work for me or Cavill's scream 19. The blu ray is fantastic

-I thought killing Zod was fine. It wasn’t the smartest move, but trying to stop him in that position was trickier than it looked. He was about to murder innocent women and children! Hell with that guy! Also didn’t he literally throw Zod off a damned cliff in Superman II? Case closed.
-Amy Adams was solid as Lois Lane. She’s no Margot Kidder, but what she delivered was satisfying for a love interest.
-I dug Michael Shannon as Zod. He seemed like a real threat to Superman and has some shining moments. One of the better DCEU villains.
-While Williams’ score still remains supreme, I admired what Hans Zimmer composed giving it an epic feel.
-Henry Cavill was great. Reeve is still the best, but this modern take of Supes was well executed.
-It was also the first Superman movie I ever saw, so that makes it a more sentimental film for me.

I think the nonlinear narrative and "first natural birth of Krypton" stuff needlessly convolutes the movie. I think Smallville did a better job of showing us a confused young Clark and that this brooding, personally-less version was a mistake. I think a nihilstic Pa Kent was an even bigger mistake, and they probably should have swapped his and Jor-El's pep talks. I think Amy Adams lacked spunk as Lois.
I liked Zod, the score, the fight scenes, and how it basically feels like an alien invasion movie. So there's that.

It feels like since the success of Batman Begins that every comic book superhero now has to be a dark, brooding warrior like Batman. This approach doesn't work with all these characters.

All in all I strongly dislike the film—but one aspect that I have always particularly disliked was how much of the movie was set on a horrible-looking Krypton. And much of the flick bored me silly.

I think the opening on Krypton and the stuff in Smallville is superb, but the movie completely loses me once the action moves to Metropolis.
Overall for me, it was just a weak way to inaugurate the DC movie universe. I think BvS and Wonder Woman were both much better films.

It feels like since the success of Batman Begins that every comic book superhero now has to be a dark, brooding warrior like Batman. This approach doesn't work with all these characters. Christopher Reeve and Dean Cain both nailed the character. In both instances, Superman came across as a relatively uncomplicated, well-meaning nice guy. Reeve's Kent was more goofy, but that added to the charm. Cavill's broodiness was off-putting. Last year, I read a series of comic books entitled "Injustice: Gods Among Us" which featured the Justice League and showed Superman being corrupted after murdering the Joker. It was an extremely dark take on the character, but handled the transition from optimistic boy scout to cold-blooded despot extremely well. Such a story would be fascinating to see on the big screen. But that's alternative universe fiction really.

It's great. I love that it's a Sci-Fi Invasion film as opposed to the typical Superhero origin story.
I like how it jumps to Clark as an adult as opposed to chronological order. With flashbacks instead.
Great cast, loved Jor-El vs Zod theme.
My only gripe is the ending. It is a 9/10 until the final act, then it falls apart a bit.
Right up until Superman gives all his strength to go into that blue beam, and it cuts to Perry holding Jenny's hand tearing ip, waiting to die... Then to they suck them into the Phantom Zone.
If at that point Zod got sucked in as well, it cuts to Superman flying in just in time to catch Lois. They kiss. It cuts to Clark talking to his Mom about "What will you do when youre not saving the world?" And she says his father would have been proud of the man he chose to be. Ends with him going to the Plant.

The best and worst thing I can say about Man of Steel is that I barely remember it.

It's my #1 super hero movie and within my Top 233 movies in general.
I gave it a 6-6.5/10.

I loved Russell Crowe and the world building on Krypton. I enjoyed it so much I was hoping they'd do a prequel movie.
I loved Amy Adams as Lois.
That's it. The rest was meh.

The success of the film led to Amy wearing less clothes in the next film.
