I liked it. It was fun. I am more of a Kong than Godzilla guy, but they are going to have to find a way to increase Kong's durability.

i just wanna say how happy i am this site exist. i cannot deal with a world where i cannot come out of the cinema and be able to go and ready what so many other people thought and potentially have a place to ask questions too. I liked the movie, but the person that went with me kinda hated it, for lack of character development and better plot. I agree on the character development, but I actually thought the plot was fairly decent. and i loved the humor in the movie and the many different ways to die they portrayed in it

Kong and the Island were the stars. I'd have been disappointed if they wasted time on bigger sub-plots with the human characters. Therefore, I'm okay with the lack of character development . I absolutely loved how they showed Hank Marlow return to his family during the credits. That was enough character development for me ETA: Sorry for the screwed up spoiler, it was the first time I used it on this forum, lol.

I agree. Giant monster movies like this one and Godzilla don't need to be bogged down by a lot of worthless subplots. Remember this movie is in the Godzilla universe which makes it quite different in tone from King Kong '33 or King Kong '05.

Remember this movie is in the Godzilla universe which makes it quite different in tone from King Kong '33 or King Kong '05. The giant lizard story-line seems to be a set up for a Kong vs Godzilla sequel, which I am already anxiously anticipating. This movie really displays how far we've come with CGI animation. Those animals felt real to me. They gave Kong real personality. Really, the majority of the human characters were so annoying, you couldn't help but hope that Kong or a lizard would Kill most of them ( the exception being Hank and a few of the soldiers). I was disappointed Hiddleston's character and his perfect hair didn't get eaten.

Really enjoyed this one. It's not a deep or complicated movie, but it's good fun and does a lot of things right. For one, they get to the action reasonably quickly. There's no waiting forever to get to him, the way Jackson did it. For another, you get Kong in daylight! One of my big bugbears in movies with lots of CGI is when they put all the action in the dark, or rain, or both, because it's cheaper to do the CGI that way. But not this movie! In fact I think pretty much every major action sequence takes place in daylight. I appreciated that they did something different with the plot. No Kong going to New York, no Kong falling off the Empire State Building or World Trade Centre. Jackson was kinda looney bad guy, but not so much that it was over the top. It was perfectly believable that he would go down the path he did, given how the first meeting with Kong went. In fact all the characters seem fairly reasonable and believable. I liked the treatment of the natives. Previous Kong movies have always treated the natives pretty poorly, and since the natives are usually black guys, there's a dollop of unfortunate implications in that. Here we get natives that are not paragons of virtue, but not bad guys either. Just people, living out their lives as best they can. Overall, good movie, I'd rate it maybe an 8.

I agree with all of this. I do wish Jackson's character had been less cartoonish. I enjoy SLJ in just about anything, though. I felt like I was watching a live action comic book. It was great.

Just got out of a 3D showing a little while ago. We loved it. Enjoyed the setup for Godzilla, Mothra, etc. at the end of the credits as well. Definitely worth waiting for, and that final Big G roar was the end of a nice night of cinema. I thought Kebbell was weak in whatever accent that was supposed to be, and his acting, as always, was flaky at best. Was surprised when his death came out of nowhere, considering he's usually pushed as a leading man type. I was glad to see Goodman's character die, since he'd have to be pushing 100+ if they tried to make him still alive in the current age with the Godzilla films. The CGI was absolutely stellar. ILM and the few addtional vfx companies did an outstanding job on this one. One last thing--Brie Larson is a horrible actress. She has almost zero range. Seriously, it was like watching a block of wood in a wig.

How long are we gonna keep spoiler tagging? It's out in the US now. I thought it was ok, but I found the story to be repetitive.
Crazy conspiracy theorist guy turns out to be right and then dies? check. Giant monster turns out to be the hero? check. There's another giant monster that is the actual villain? check. Someone mentions that earth doesn't belong to humans? check. Someone suggests letting the giant hero monster fight the giant bad monster? check. The military has a plan to kill the hero giant monster but it goes awry and they instead let the hero monster defeat the bad monster? check. Someone's trying to get home to their family and succeeds in the end? check.

You realize the AAs are largely regarded as a joke by a lot of moviegoers, right? Those things are nothing but Hollywood politics; rarely does it have anything to do with actual talent. That being said, I have no idea what else she's been in, nor do I care honestly. In this, she was horrendous. Don't get me wrong, she wasn't drugged-up-acting-Jessica-Lange bad like in the 70s movie, but she was bad.

I created a thread for reviews with spoliers, but I think since the movie is so new, and spoilers aren't mentioned in the thread title here, it's a courtesy to use them.

Saw it today. It was a popcorn movie that was fun. I rate it about the same as Jurassic World. It was fun but the screenplay was a bit ridicules. Too many characters. Wish they would have highlighted just 3 to 4 characters instead of the dozen plus that had lines. The highlight of the movie was Kong himself, which I entirely appreciated. 6.5/10

Better or worse than 1933, 76, 05? Worth seeing in theater?

Better or worse than 1933, 76, 05? Worth seeing in theater? I haven't seen 33 or 05, but its much different from 76. Hard to compare really. If you like special effects, and creature features, it's for you, and DEFINITELY on the big screen. If you are looking for a think piece and a lot of character development, skip it.
