Well, I'll personally never forget Campbell's work, nor the fun of the old Astoundings and Analog's that he pioneered. Those were great for a very long time. I won't forget where he went to and took that magazine either when he got into his later years. I guess I can now confess that I stole a book of Campbell stories from the school library--it was a beaten up paperback. Mainly it was to read Who Goes There?

Good god, you are listening to faustus! The most deranged, hated man on these boards?
That's hilarious coming from someone who is recognized as one of the dumbest people to post on the Politics board, a racist simpleton who gets his ignorant ass handed to him on a daily basis. Sure, I'm hated by a few--by extreme right wing, racist nutcases, whose hate I regard as a prerequisite for my being a decent person. Among those who value science, rationality and decency, I get likes on a routine basis. Like just a few minutes ago.

A fine story. Fascinating and horrifying story. I think Carpenter did a nice job fairly faithfully.

Yeah it they had the names and alien looked the same (Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials had a spooky picture of the thing based on the story) but I think the base had many more people than 12. 30 or something.. and they had cows on the base, I remember.

Another aspect to this is that Campbell (and Lovecraft) are attacked for their views on race but has anyone seen the 1910 Encyclopedia Britannica entry for "negro?" It reads like something from a KKK convention. BTW even Mark Twain referred to "the simple negro" in one of his social critique essays for Harper's Magazine and he was taking their side in a discussion about business exploitation.
It isn't Campbell's fault that he did not have access to a crystal ball to see how Chicago and Baltimore and Detroit would benefit from diversity in 2019 and how wrong he was in the 40s and 50s.

It went into the late 60''s, and several authors wouldn't submit their works to his publication anymore because of his actions. Many noted Sci Fi authors went on record then about his behavior. I'm not sure what you mean about diversity in the cities now other than you believe he was right. Is that what you are getting at?

I'm not sure what you mean about diversity in the cities now other than you believe he was right. Is that what you are getting at? I'm saying that a couple of the quotes there attributed to him are less detailed than what the 1910 Britannica said, and even if he felt the same in the 1960s it would no doubt be because he had not experienced any diversity (positive or negative). Yet, the magazine still named the awards after him and no one cared for decades. Given the fact that it was a non European that ranted against him (yet claimed the prize) it at least shows that ethnic tribalism is alive and well today as it was 100 years ago. She did not attack him out of fairness-otherwise she would have factored in the demographics of the pre-Hart-Celler United States in her remarks (and maybe said something critical about how her Han Chinese friends are treating the Tibetans--but that would mean siding with a different ethnic tribe--which is what she condemned Campbell for).

One argument I heard for the name change of the award is that since Campbell would not approve of a winner like Ng (and he most certainly would not-based on her speech her writing must be SJW-laced), it was best to take the name off so as not to make him look bad. Changing the award because it no longer fits his writing style/tastes makes sense--but what a horrendous way of doing it(I heard his grandson was in attendance and some people cheered when she made her remarks).
