ZZ and Real Madrid owe this to the amazing goalscoring form of Benzema who has seen off, among others, CR7 and Bale, and flourished with a little help from Ramos' penalties. Did you see his farcical penalty last night? www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMu1vwmnuvE No, but I'm led to believe it was something akin to the Henry/Pires effort of a few years ago.

Atletico must see this season as their big opportunity. Braca is not playing well. They just need to outperform their city rivals.

In a very major game in context of the season, Atletico has defeated Barca 1-0. Now Atletico are joint topper with Sociedad but with 1 game in hand.Real Madrid managed a draw against Villareal thereby stopping the 3rd place Villareal from getting to no.1 in the standings.

It took an own goal by Seville's Bounou to clinch a 0-1 victory for Real Madrid this afternoon. Second half goals from Lemar and Llorente saw Atlético claim victory over Valladolid. Cádiz saw off Barcelona 2-1 with Barca's one goal netted in his own net by Cádiz' Alcalá. And that defeat leaves Barca on just 4 wins from 10. Atlético 1/1 Real Madrid 3/1 Barcelona 7/2 12/1 BAR Top Six | PLD | PTS | Atlético Madrid | 10 | 26 | Real Sociedad | 11 | 24 | Real Madrid | 11 | 20 | Villarreal | 11 | 20 | Cádiz | 12 | 18 | Sevilla | 10 | 16 |

Messi missed a penalty, a weak effort which the Valencia keeper easily dealt with, as Barcelona had to settle for a 2-2 home draw v Valencia. They remain 5th, eight points behind Atletico having played one more.

Both Atlético and Real enjoying cracking recent form except, for Atlético, Real securing the points in El Derbi Madrileño a fortnight ago. Bookies go 11/10 Atlético, 11/8 Real with Barca coming into 5s after collecting ten points from 12 since that defeat by Cádiz at the beginning of the month. It's 33/1 BAR.

Awesome Suarez might make Atletico the champions this season. But this is not to take away the credit Diego Simeone and great defense of Madrid over the years.
Atletico 4/9 Real 3/1 Barca 8/1

Atlético keep winning but so do the other two. Barcelona have played as many cup games this year as league games (6 & 6) They lost the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final to Seville on Wednesday having already fought their way to the Super Copa final only to lose that to Bilbao in January. They have won their last 6 league outings and now find themselves as 2nd favourites, albeit at long odds. Real Madrid, who crashed out of both cups in the space of six days in January, have not since fully benefitted from league-only commitment, winning three but losing a home tie to mid-table Levante three games ago. Since being unceremoniously dumped by Barcelona, Luis Suarez has been nothing short of superb for Atlético, and you're left scratching your head at 1) how he was allowed to leave in the first place and 2) how he came to play for the league leaders who were already halfway - only halfway - to wrapping up the title. Two goals in Atlético's last game, two in the one before that, one in the one before that, two in the one before that...seven of 16 he has racked up since joining in late September. Atlético's next three games are away to Granada (7th place) who they walloped 6-1 in Madrid in September - including two goals for Suarez on his debut - before playing a double header with Levante (9th) Then of course it's the Champions League versus Chelsea on the 23rd. Barcelona face Deportivo (16th place) Cadiz (14th) and Elche (19th) interrupted between first and second by the Champions League clash with PSG. Real Madrid face Valencia (13th place) Valladolid (18th) and Real Sociedad (6th) interrupted between second and third by Atalanta in the Champions League. So how will things stand by the time El Derbi Madrileño comes around on March 7th? Those next-three games sequences seem pretty balanced to my eyes (Barca's trilogy perhaps the least threatening) so can we dare to picture a Real win at Atlético thus reducing the margin to two points? Or one? Or three? But however it pans out, Atlético will still have those two games in hand over Real and the one over Barca. Ideally we'd most of us like the next three games to pan out so that there's only 3 points separating 1st and 3rd (Atlético to gain 4pts, Real 7pts, Barca 9pts - giving us a table looking something like this - ATL MADRID 55 PTS REAL MADRID 53 PTS BARCA 52 PTS That 's what you call nicely set up. But for now here's the actual top of the table.
| PLD | PTS | GD | Atlético Madrid | 20 | 51 | 30 | Real Madrid | 22 | 46 | 20 | Barcelona | 21 | 43 | 24 |
Title Odds : Atlético Madrid 1/3 Barcelona 5/1 Real Madrid 11/2

The fiendish plot outlined above is coming along nicely. The three Atlético games have yielded them just 4 points. Real Madrid have played two of theirs and have collected 6 points with a hoped-for draw against 6th placed Sociedad next week to complete their participation in the scheme, giving them 7 points. And Barcelona are at home to lower-placed Cadiz and Elche in the next few days - 6 points, you would think, giving them a total of 9, having whipped Deportivo last week. The real witchcraft is spun around Atlético taking just the 1 point from the double-header with Levante. Defensive issues are costing them and they've now gone six consecutive league games without a clean sheet, a record for coach Simeone's entire managing career so far. But in the away game v Levante the shocker was at the other end of the pitch when, Correa, seizing on Suarez' parried shot, had the goal at his mercy from 6 yards out and absolutely blazed the ball skyward. Look at the footage and see teammate Llorente already celebrating the 'goal' before putting his hands to his head in disbelief. That miss would have put Atlético 1-2 up but it finished a draw. The first home defeat of the season today came v Levante courtesy of an Hermosa own goal and a 96th minute sealant to throw the title race, well, wide open really, if Barca get their next two results right. Atlético don't play in La Liga again till the 28th and of course will have a game in hand (or two, is it?) But, hey, points in the bag is what we're dealing with here. The bookies have had to do some marked readjusting with all this and Atlético, previously touted at 3s on, are now as big as 8/11 with Paddy Power. Real, as big as 11/2 eight days ago are now a mere 12/5 with the same bookie and a best-priced 9/2 with Hills, pretty damn tempting given their neighbour's sudden giddy turn. Barcelona, given their need to play catch-up, are unmoved and still a best priced 5/1 (Hills) but are also as skinny as 10/3 with a couple of firms. Our hoped-for top three situation is very much on and we could be in for a thrilling run-in. Current Table -
| PLD | PTS | GD | Atlético | 23 | 55 | 29 | Real Madrid | 24 | 52 | 23 | Barcelona | 22 | 46 | 28 |
Hoped-for Table by Wednesday 24th - ATL MADRID 55 PTS REAL MADRID 53 PTS BARCA 52 PTS

From the moment that Levante opened the scoring, ATM laid siege to their goal with Suarez, Jose Felix, and ex-Celt Dembele, trying their utmost to get their team on terms, before looking for a winner. Alas it was not to be. A combination of the woodwork, a resolute defense, and a keeper who was always on the right spot denied them. They had an abundance of chances but the ball just would not go in. The realization that, no matter what they did, it was not going to be their day, became clear in the last seconds when, having gotten themselves a corner and called their keeper to the front line in the hope that he might do something miraculous, a clearance fell to one of their players who was approx 30 yards out. Instead of having a shot at goal, he tried an ill-advised chip to a teammate who was wide left, only to see that pass intercepted by a Levante defender, who ran it to the halfway line and then calmly slotted a 50-yarder into the empty net with the ATM keeper, optimistically waiting in the other penalty area, for a cross. ATM played well without scoring and they are the best La Liga team that I have seen. They should wrap up the title with room to spare.

Atletico is falling apart! A draw against Getafe (Getafe with 10 men from 70th minute) leaves them just 4 ahead if Barca wins their next game.

Atletico is falling apart! Let's have a look at the latest title odds before Barcelona's game on Monday. Atlético 5/6 Barcelona 7/4 Real Madrid 9/2 250/1 BAR I think after the Barca game, when they've all played the same amount of games, it'll be time for another 3-game conjecture/prediction scenario like the one posted above which was rolling along famously until Barca's 1-1 home draw with Cadiz. You hope Atlético can hold it together.
