Could the secrecy have anything to do with avoiding the paying of residuals to the singer? *
Speaking of residuals. Do actors (even extras) get paid whenever a movie or tv show is shown? This came up when I was describing the Great Sleuth Dilemma so it's kinda sorta connected. * I disavow any connection to the residual theory (unless it proves to be the solution ) Oh, I doubt it, Bat. My understanding is that such things are contractual, either by way of the performers' union agreement(s) or through individual negotiation, and whether their names were publicly known or not wouldn't enter into it. My squeeze in the late-'70s was a dancer/singer/actor who worked primarily in theater and clubs, would take whatever film or TV work he could get, and was a member of Actors Equity and AFTRA, but not SAG (never had a speaking role). He appeared in, among other things, the dance numbers in 1941, Movie, Movie and was among the dancing feet under the main titles of Footloose (which were shot on a little platform in a tiny photo studio off Sunset Blvd hardly larger than the average bedroom; I sat there and watched the whole thing and all those feet were just he and one other guy and two girl dancers...while one was on the platform, the others would be changing their shoes and legwear for their next shot), and he never got a penny beyond the scale paycheck for any of it; just an anonymous gypsy. EDIT: While you were whistling, I was typing.

So now I get to watch Footloose and know that the owner one of those pairs of feet was someone who knew someone who I know. Cool ! On the Boomerang thread (over there -----> Mattgarth pinpoints which of the jurors was his granddad. Smothered in fame we are ! Anyhoo.... that scale pay thing was my understanding but "residuals" comes up in discussion periodically, Based on nothing and coming from someone who describes actors as "that guy who was in that movie, you know !" and expects me to ID the actor AND the film ! You type better than I whistle Doghouse6

Oh, I dunno...your whistling seems to work at least as well as my typing (even better, in fact: I never let one of these things go without diligent proofreading, and would you believe I could make 4 typos - make that 5; just had to correct another - in those first 15 words?). Nalkarj Sorry, I had to ad lib that above. I haven't received today's script yet. EDIT: And to BATouttaheck , we're thinking alike again.

A crazy idea-could you try contacting Atherton? If he did have a side career as a singer perhaps he may know names who know names or have some old singer film dub talk shop anecdote that could be useful in this search? At least he would be glad someone was writing to tell him something other than how much they would like to punch Thornburg in the face.

Two new things, both very minor: 1. I've finally posted this to the TCM boards, link here. 2. I've noticed that @kevinsch (who first alerted us to Feinstein's posting) and carlcarlson1 have both disappeared. Heck, maybe the singer in Sleuth mystery does that to people... (But then what about me? Ah, well, I'm nuts anyway. ) Been too busy making memes on Facebook, no luck, I take it?

carlcarlson1No worries, and thank you for searching in the first place. As you guessed, no luck, though...

And now it is. Well. Seriously, I've tried using an unsolved mysteries forum and several music and movie forums. I also tried reaching out to radio stations in Boston and New York--to no avail thus far. Yep.

The great man himself, Santayana, wrote, “Fanaticism consists in redoubling your efforts when you have forgotten your aim.” Ahem.
This is something I have long borne in mind and should, indeed, continue to do. Ahem.
All completely irrelevant regarding the topic at hand, of course. Of course. Ahem.
Just a bit of news: Rob Nixon wrote the article on Sleuth for TCM; I recently contacted him to see if he knows anything about our mysterious singer. Very unlikely? Aye, ladies and gents, but at this point anything’s worth a shot, if only so that I can pass the mantle of “hunting down Sleuth singer” to him—hey, he’s paid to be a “researcher,” anyway!

NalkarjStarted to watch Penny Serenade last night and as Irene played each record the thought ran thru my l'il pea brain... "I wonder if Salzmank can ID this singer " and here is Sleuth yet again. Great timing ! No word from Michael F. ?
I think I cudda / shudda been a "researcher"... they get paid $$$$ you say ? Hmmmmmmmm !

“For of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: ‘it might have been!’” But it’s never too late, BATouttaheck! Nixon very kindly responded; he does get paid, but it’s only a small amount per article for doing some research on it. Unfortunately (but unsurprisingly), he doesn’t have any information on the singer but is intrigued nonetheless. A coinkydink (as my mother would say), Bat! All these singers… Oy! It was nice that Feinstein put the question on his Facebook page, but he never actually responded to me. He apparently didn’t have any guesses (at least, he didn’t post any, he only posted the question), and none of the commenters were sure either. Half of them suggested Porter himself again (and at least one confused it with the Sleuth remake)! No worries, just another dead end in the Queen of Hearts’s maze…

Just reached out to TCM (something I should have done early on). Nixon thinks that Ben Mankiewicz may be interested.

Doghouse6, I’ve actually just sent out an e-mail to the Margaret Herrick Library; the e-mails to Nixon roped me back into this! As Michael Corleone put it:Hoping that between TCM and AMPAS, there may be something…

Doghouse6 , I’ve actually just sent out an e-mail to the Margaret Herrick Library; the e-mails to Nixon roped me back into this! Hoping that between TCM and AMPAS, there may be something… In the intrepid traditions of Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty, Conway and Shangri-La or Indy and the Lost Ark or Holy Grail: Nalkarj and the Sleuth Singer (not to be confused with the Sooth Slinger; that was John Carradine in The Garden Of Allah). The Mounties always get their man, Fred always gets Ginger and Rock always gets Doris; may your quest be as blessed. And we're with you every step of the way.
