"And we're with you every step of the way." (as long as you keep bringing the and ) During the Olympics, those pretty much comprise our steady diet.

Doghouse6 , I’ve actually just sent out an e-mail to the Margaret Herrick Library; the e-mails to Nixon roped me back into this! Hoping that between TCM and AMPAS, there may be something… In the intrepid traditions of Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty, Conway and Shangri-La or Indy and the Lost Ark or Holy Grail: Nalkarj and the Sleuth Singer (not to be confused with the Sooth Slinger; that was John Carradine in The Garden Of Allah). The Mounties always get their man, Fred always gets Ginger and Rock always gets Doris; may your quest be as blessed. And we're with you every step of the way. As long as it’s not my great white whale! And thanks as always for the support.

OK, not much news, but here’s a reply from AMPAS: “Your query was forwarded to the library’s fee-based National Film Information Service (NFIS). “The finding aid to the Joseph Mankiewicz papers is available in Manuscripts Inventories. As a courtesy I looked at the SLEUTH material. There appears to be nothing in the papers on the music. Have you contacted the Musicians Union or Equity in the U.K.? I’m assuming the unions would be involved if the recording and singer were contemporary to the film. “www.musiciansunion.org.uk “https://www.equity.org.uk/singers/ “Have you been in touch with Warner/Chappell? Their predecessor Warner Bros. Music was credited with the Cole Porter music used in the film. “Good luck in your endeavor, let us know if you find anything out. “Regards, “Kristine Krueger.” I may shoot off an e-mail to the unions in the U.K.; I greatly appreciated that Ms. Krueger looked at the archives as a courtesy. Well, there ya go, just another dead-end in the labyrinth, another side-path off the rabbit-hole…

“Good luck in your endeavor, let us know if you find anything out. “Regards, “Kristine Krueger.” How's that for turnabout? Right back on ya, bud! Kidding aside, props to Ms. Krueger for the effort and an astonishingly prompt reply. At least it's one more resource to tick off the list of possibilities. The more I think about it, the more convinced I become that any extant documentation (or digitization or other representation thereof) of the actual performer involved would be in the form of payroll records or call sheets for the recording sessions, apparently done under the supervision of long-dead (1978) arranger Gary Hughes, whom IMDB credits for "songs." Those unions do provide another avenue; one door closes, another opens. I do hope to hell the guy is still living. It's as good a possibility as any, I suppose, that some friend or relative might stumble across one or more posts related to your search and tell him, "Hey, did you know there are people looking for you?"

Nalkarj Doghouse6 et al Is there a "runs screaming from the room" emoji? Actually, I've got nothing to complain about. Nalkarj's doing all the heavy lifting. Get a load of those "research biceps!"

Doghouse6, BATouttaheckThanks, guys. Hey, can I once more give that “comedy duo” recommendation? I was surprised at and greatly appreciated her promptness too and sent an e-mail telling her thanks; she got back to me with a “very welcome” almost immediately. Probably the nicest person I’ve e-mailed thus far in this, er, “quest.” (James D’Arc seemed particularly uninterested… ) As for “turnabout,” in all seriousness most of the people to whom I’ve written (D’Arc excepted again) have asked that I let them know if and (sorry, Bat) when I find the singer. I’m surprised but happy that they’re just as interested as I am… (I’m not crazy, really! Don’t believe the signature! I’m not!) Of course, I’ve got you fellas to back me up, but then we’re the Three Musketeers of the Sleuth search! Doghouse, I’m also convinced that there’s something, and one of the reasons I’ve posted this to so many places is my hope that he (or someone who knows/knew) sees it. Imagine if one day ye olde Mysterious Mr. X sends me an e-mai (or posts here)l: “Uh, hi. Saw a bunch of posts you made about this. Yeah, that was me. Just a side gig. Kinda fun. Got to sound like a ‘30s singer. Never did meet Olivier or Caine, though.” Somehow doubting that, but still. Yes, Bat, when! When, please God, unto the ends of the earth! Though my rational mind tells me that I should join Doghouse and go running to meet Stan and Babe in them thar hills, I’ll be more than happy to join in the search for the Penny Serenade singers. Ahh… Perhaps I am nuts after all…

Ahh… Perhaps I am nuts after all… I've been following this one and was hoping to see it solved. On the old board there was a thread with a clip from a 1960's charity baseball game, asking about some unidentified actors. Nancy Sinatra was in the video, and someone got the bright idea to ask her, and she identified them. Salzmank, if anyone tells me I'm just an old man, I look at him and say, "And you are a young man, dressed as a clown, about to be murdered."

Thanks, The Herald Erjen . I’d love to contact Michael Caine, but (1) I doubt he’d know, especially as he shared no scenes with the singer (no one did, in reality), and (2) I don’t have any contact information! Love the quote! I’m particularly fond of the one about Charles I: “Did you know that on the morning of his execution King Charles I put on two shirts? ‘If I tremble with cold,’ he said, ‘my enemies will say it was from fear; I will not expose myself to such reproaches.’ You too, Milo Tindle, must attempt dignity as you mount the steps to the scaffold.”

You could make a guerilla documentary about this. Get a 30 second interview with Michael Caine and the distribution deal is secure.

And lastly I went through a short list of vocalists (Don Estelle, Mario Lanza, Frankie Lane, and Howard McGillin) who covered Cole Porter and Don Estelle sounds pretty close to the cover vocalist in the movie As does Bill Kerr (You may try listening to the entire album and see if someone else comes close) COLE part 1 -- JULIA McKENZIE / BILL KERR / UNA STUBBS / ROD McLENNAN -- Cole Porter Revue 1974 www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsSJfI2HZZ8&t=542sWhispering Grass - Windsor Davies & Don Estelle (1975) (HD) www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZprkGIc-bgY
