What's the verdict on McGregor's accent? I'm not from Minnesota but it seems appalling to me.

Just caught up with episode 1. Sir Walter Scott said it "Oh what a tangled web we weave..." and this looks to be a humdinger of a tangled web being weaved. I need to watch it again, there was so much going on, I might have missed something. Ewan McGregor, playing a dual role, makes you wonder why he doesn't win more awards for hs acting. He and his partner Mary Elizabeth Winstead (stealing scene after scene) are a terrific pair and were at the heart of this opener. Can't give much away but I was struck by Michael Stuhlbarg (aka Arnold Rothstein from Boardwalk Empire). In his make-up here, he bears an uncanny resemblance to Joaquin Phoenix. Great opener.

I just finished watching myself. Weird first scene, like the Reagan movie stuff that opened up Season 2. I'm already thinking M.E. Winstead will shine in this, like BB Thornton in Season 1 and Jeffrey Donovan and Bokeem Woodbine in Season Two. Weird thing in the episode, twice mentioning an off screen character who goes by the name of "Ermentraut". Might be a somewhat common name in Minnesota or a Better Call Saul crossover?

Magic Roundabout crossover would rule!

Yes, I kept waiting for Mike to appear.
That opening scene was awesomely scary and bleak and later, I wondered whether it had some connection to the box that Carrie Coon found in her father's house.

Magic Roundabout crossover would rule! That was "Ermintrude".

It's been a good week on TV. Not only have we had Fargo and The Leftovers returning but Bosch has launched its new season, as well.
Also started is the new Idris Elba show "Guerrilla" which is getting good reviews and I'm seriously looking forward to American Gods, which comes from a Weird and Wonderful novel.

Downloaded it. Very good indeed. However, it was a smidgeon below the level of the openers for series 1 and 2 I reckon.

Yeah its been a while alright. Been flat out with college work. Just uploaded my project final today (equivalent of a thesis I spose). 4 weeks until my last exam an then I'm done, hopefully with a degree in the bag. Never thought I'd have one of those. How's things?

Things are OK, cheers. Don't see much of your or Squelchy on here these days though. Exams are more important of course. Squelchy sometimes posts on the books forum here. Best of luck to you over the next 4 weeks! We're all with you every inch of the way!

I finally had the chance to watch Ep 1 and I am hooked. I am looking forward to Ep 2 this week.
I response to the question about McGregor's accent. You need to get around 2 hours north of the Twin Cities before the heavy Fargo accent becomes apparent. Not all northern Minnesota residents speak with that accent mind you. I would say that Michael Stuhlbarg (Emmit Stussy's right-hand man) best captures the accent Fargo is trying to duplicate.

That doesn't surprise me at all. Stuhlbarg is a great actor.

*****SPOILERS*****
The Leftovers ep 2 is another fabulously enthralling story, this one featuring Nora (Carrie Coon) in her role as "Investigator of the Departed", embarking on a trip to St Louis to check-out a group who offer to show Leftovers how to follow their Departed (for a price). She has a few surreal adventures along the way and returns to Kevin to announce that they are going to Australia.
Suddenly the story switches to Brucieland where some middleaged Shielas take umbrage with a cop...and who pops up in the last frame.....?
There's something about this show that reminds me of LOST when it was at its very best, in the early seasons.

What's the verdict on McGregor's accent? I'm not from Minnesota but it seems appalling to me. I think what makes it harder for him is portraying two separate Minnesota accents, (as he plays two characters) however tbh I was quite impressed (based on other fargo accents - rather than minnesota) - he can barely even reproduce a working class Edinburgh accent. He speaks pigeon scottish london LA these days.

"he can barely even reproduce a working class Edinburgh accent"
He can't. His accent was far too pan-loafie for the character he was portraying. Same with Johnnie Miller (excellent Scottish accent but a bit too posh for the character.)

Just watched ep 2 of Fargo. Some of the cast are overacting to a boring degree. Yes, you David Thewlis. A disappointment for me
