As some of you may know, I don’t watch movies at home. Movies are sacred and belong on a big screen and are intended to be consumed as a communal experience. I honor and enjoy that to this day.
In practice what it means is that unless I saw a movie on tv when’s i was very young and didn’t have this self imposed rule yet, I won’t see it until it makes a comeback to the cinemas.
So I only saw Star Wars 3 years ago for the first time, (all of them, I wouldn’t go see the new ones in fear of spoilers of the original ones) I only saw Scarface 2 years ago and Goodfellas last year.
Today finally Godfather.
I couldnt help but giggle during the movie because all of a sudden so many Other movies and shows made so much sense. Oh so many references from the Simpsons! Or Community. Or Seinfeld oh god the Seinfeld homage! So hilarious now to finally get it all.
Now to the movie - I enjoyed it very very much. And I must say that I found Al Pacinos performance simply amazing, I so enjoyed him being more civil / less animated, than how I know him from other movies.
But I really liked everything about it except it was somewhat difficult for me to understand all the relationships and motivations right away but I guess that will be better with a second viewing.
Like, was Luca making it seem like he Was going to accept (and they recognized that as a traitor sign) or that he was Not going to accept (and that’s why he was killed?).
9/10 from me easy anyway.
Looking forward to seeing the sequel sometime when it comes to the theaters again.

Meh, I like watching movies at home for convenience, but the theatre is a better experience. I also watched this movie very late in my life, last year to be exact.

They were too civilized to be a believable mob family. Also a little too overpowered. Like they were the illuminati they could manipulate the media. Real life mobsters will scare you half to death.

Surely you'd make an exception for direct-to-video films. Otherwise you may miss out on most of Shannon Tweed's filmography.

Catman started watching that once but simply could not connect with it. Gave up after about a hour.

I see 4-5 movies at the cinemas each week so thats enough for me to see weekly i guess...

Real life mobsters will scare you half to death. thats possible yeah. i found myself quickly rooting for Don corleone and then eventually Michael. I even considered them somehow “good”, exactly because how civilized to almost noble acting they often appeared...

Then you must live in a large city which has a theatre that runs older movies long past their first release date. I did to at one time. Like that was how I saw Easy Rider, Hair, Alien and too many other big screen movies that I am not remembering right now. The Red Victorian in the San Francisco Haight District was the place. Good times. Looking them up, I just found out they closed a few years ago! Must be because I moved away and they aren't getting my business anymore. Everyday they would show a different movie through the day at different times. Is that how it is where you watch or do they run the same one for a few days or a week?

Looking forward to seeing the sequel sometime when it comes to the theaters again. That must really restrict your ability to view older movies. I prefer watching at home personally. It's more convenient, I can watch late at night (as I like doing) and having a large DVD/Blu Ray collection - plus streaming - means an endless supply of options. Admittedly, the cinema can provide greater spectacle for certain kinds of movies. Glad you enjoyed The Godfather. It really is a masterpiece. Do try to check out the sequel at some stage. It's equally amazing. It was playing in a local cinema here a few years ago, but I couldn't sit through a movie that long on the big screen (or in a single sitting).

What a treat to watch it for the first time. I love those little jokes and references that we don't get until years later.
"Like, was Luca making it seem like he Was going to accept (and they recognized that as a traitor sign) or that he was Not going to accept (and that’s why he was killed?)."
They would've killed Luca no matter what he said. The plan was to assassinate Don Corleone. They knew Luca was 100% loyal to Corleone and he couldn't be reasoned with after the plan was carried out. Tom Hagen told them even if there was a truce, he still couldn't stop Luca from coming after them. At that point, Tom didn't know Luca was already sleeping with the fishes.

It is a remake of THE BROTHERHOOD starring Kirk Douglas. The plot summary is identical. "The son of a powerful Mafia don comes home from his army service and wants to lead his own life, but family tradition, intrigues and powerplays involving his older brother dictate otherwise, and he finds himself being slowly drawn back into that world."
Both are Paramount. I am convinced Mario Puzo was hired to write the book so they could use it as a publicity launch for a new version.

The theater experience is overrated. I prefer at home in general even though seeing a movie in a theater once in a while can be okay to mix things up. hell, I have not been to the theaters since Oct 28th 2011 (i.e. In Time (2011)).
plus, at home you can pause a movie whenever you want and you ain't got to worry about others potentially ruining the experience etc.

Luca is described as devotedly loyal to Don Corleone. To the point where even Sonny, the Dons son, wouldn’t be able to call off Luca from attacking the Dons enemies. Sonny sent Luca to try and get in with Solotzo but Solotzo saw thru it and killed Luca while he had the chance.
