Some people just have to see racism everywhere... True but are you saying you don't think it's at all at play re coronavirus? e.g. Here th South Africans very early on were saying that the hospitalisations rates were around a quarter of the previous variant, yet here in the UK we completely ignored their data. Plus, more broadly, covid is very much an opportunity to see the nationalism of various countries at play. i.e. "We'll close down our borders to all these foreigners bringing in their diseases here and we'll defeat covid". I don't know about the UK and I don't know about hospitalisation rates, but in absolute numbers here in Canada I am pretty sure the figures are comparable if not higher than during previous waves.

I think the case numbers here were as high as they've ever been over the last holiday period. Although it's hard to definitively equate that given the number of tests conducted were also at record levels.
But the question the South Africans raise over the omnicron variant isn't whether it was infectious or not, it was why did western countries choose to ignore their findings that it was markedly less severe.

I can't speak for other countries but here in Canada the South African contention that Omicron was less severe but more transmissible was never questioned. We still re-introduced restrictions because the number of cases shot up, overwhelming the healthcare system, even though number of deaths was lower. Some people just have to see racism everywhere... Math isn't very popular with human beings this 21st century. The probability of deaths from a less dangerous, yet far more contagious variant = bad outcomes for exhausted hospitals all the same. I think most Ontario restrictions will be lifted by March, & even now ppl are whining that it's not soon enough. Their precious cable bills are more vital than burned out healthcare workers' well being.

I think the hesitation in following blindly the South African experience was due to the differences in age and population sizes along with the fact they were spring/summer compared to our winter. Always helpful, other countries stats but to blindly follow without any of our own data would be very foolhardy. Closing borders are pretty pointless although testing and isolating outside cases is well and good, because once a variant is confirmed it has already spread and is in a multitude of other countries. A government's first responsibility is to the safety of it's citizens, doing what you can with borders isn't racist its "healthist", irrelevant if the countries are black, Asian or whatever, just try and limit the spread. It's not race that's the issue it's poverty, with poor countries unable to afford the millions of doses necessary to vaccinate their populations along with the big 1st world states wanting to protect company patents and private company profits.

Yeah, I agree with a lot of what you've written there. If you look back at that BBC report I linked to though, the South Africans did reference their younger population but pointed out it wasn't all positive:- So their population's deaths due to covid is historically much higher than the UK. I think you're right though that their terminology of "racism" isn't quite right. I'd say it probably more "nationalism" that's at play. The effect of season of rates is interesting - I think we were talking about that on this thread a good while ago now. And the question of whether it was less prevalent in hot countries. But regardless the key stat of positive cases through to hospitalisations wouldn't change (regardless of case numbers) once you've actually caught it. Unless we're saying human bodies in Africa are different from human bodies in the UK. But it didn't really play out like that (as our Government's scientific advisers should really have known!). If you look here:- coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/healthcare and click on the "1y" tab you can see there are ~ half the number of people in hospitals this winter compared with last and a quarter of the cases of patients on ventilators.

Well, I'd say it's slightly harder equation than that but yeah not by much 👍 P x 2i x 1/4h != P x i x h 1/2 Pih != Pih 1/2 != 1 Looks much like how it played out based upon the UK figures...

My grandmother, my mom‘s mother, passed away this morning. It was a long time coming, after a roughly seven year Alzheimer’s battle. She hadn’t left the room in two years, and last week we were told she didn’t have long. She was my final remaining grandparent.
