Dom na Trubnoy , The House on Trubnaya (1928) Soviet Union. Dir. Boris Barnet A bewildered country girl Parasha arrives in Moscow with her pet duck tucked under her arm... The 1920s post-revolution Civil War, famine and the NEP (New Economic Policy) had driven many rural folk to the city. Adequate housing, sanitation, and services struggled to manage the population boom. Newly arrived peasants found themselves living side-by-side with little privacy, alongside their urban counterparts. Boris Barnet's socially conscious satire found humour in the clutter, chaos, and communality of this kind of living arrangement. He opens the film on an impressive cut-away set which shows the large vertical stairwell connecting 5 floors of apartments of the overcrowded tenement house. Slapstick scenes detail the daily interaction and complications that arise of the residents' living on top of one another. Spilling out onto the stairwell, housekeepers, woodchoppers, screaming children and look out for dangerously falling objects!...

Down the stairs into a dark cellar with a flashlight to check something. There ought to be a lot of pics from horror movies.  This picture happens to be from I Start Counting 1969 and there is a serial killer lurking around, though this was more of a coming-of-age movie with a few thriller moments. |
