William Peter Blatty and William Friedkin pose on a famous set of stairs. I was present when they were both there for the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.

A Matter of Life and Death (1946) dir: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger This is what I call a proper staircase. Anything with less than a million steps hardly counts:

The unergonomic layout of Fawlty Towers underlies a lot of the humor, especially this staircase.
It is so true. I have stayed in so many "guest houses" and converted hotels in England with similar inconveniences.

In Kidnapped, a novel filmed several times, David Balfour's wicked uncle tricks him into climbing the high and pitch-black tower steps, knowing that steps are missing at one point and hoping David will fall to his death. Here is David about to ascend the tower. It was too dark inside for photography so I cannot offer a still of the critical moment.

In the often filmed Pride and Prejudice, the obsequious clergyman Mr Collins is constantly boasting about the wealth of his patroness Lady Catherine de Bourgh, as evidenced by the fireplaces and staircases in her palatial home, Rosings Park. These were the most costly features in building a mansion and were a means of showing off the owner's wealth. I used to pass Hampton Court Palace when bicycling to school, and its skyline bristles with highly decorative chimneys. Mind you, showing off like that was not a smart move on Wolsey's part. David Bamber was brilliant as the creepy Collins in the 1995 BBC TV version of P & P, which is the best by a mile.
