Directors I've seen many films from - Wilder Wyler [but not silents] John Ford David Lean Thanks, OldAussie! Note that it doesn't have to be directors, merely certain categories into which a number of films may fall (e.g., "Universal horror," "Ealing comedies")--although it can be a director's filmography, of course. Wilder is an interesting choice. While I adore Ford's films, there are just so many of them that we may be here till the end of time...

16 votes Shadow of a Doubt, 12 votes Rope, 12 votes Rear Window, 10 votes Notorious, 5 votes North by Northwest, 3 votes Rebecca, 3 vote Strangers on a Train, 1 vote Psycho. Even leaving aside my personal prejudices for a moment, I'm surprised that no one wants to change his or her vote to defend Rear Window... (strategic thinking) we must be clever we must be to protect our precious North by Northwestest, tricksy,,sneaky little Hobbitses. keeps votings against the precious, We wants it, we needs it. Must not have the precious stolen from us. New voting order is: 1.Rope 1948 2. Shadow of a Doubt 1943 4. Notorious 1946 3. Rear Window 1.Rebecca 1940 (my old votes) 5.Rear Window 4.Shadow of a Doubt 1943 3.Notorious 1946 2.Rope 1948 1.Rebecca 1940

Orson Welles is an obvious first choice, personally I would like a James Mason game but I doubt that many would participate,
Woody Allen Stanley Kubrick. Akira Kurosawa (really interesting).

Regarding choice for the next game. Three points I think to keep in mind: 1. We oldies are not so au fait with new movies and stars, as you young 'uns, and vice versa. 2. Not everyone is American and so perhaps some are more familiar with movies and stars from their own countries (I'm one of them). 3. As was said, a reasonable length list, not for example John Wayne. We'd be here for ever. And if you pick Orson Welles I'm outa here. Can't stand his acting, nor any of the movies he starred in, or directed. Although I say this in jest I kid you not. I can tolerate anyone but Orson Welles.

Let me first change @eriknight's votes, and then I'll respond to all the musing about another game...
Oh, one thing, @eriknight: we agreed that leaving out a certain number of votes is OK, but not repeating one. That is, you can't have two 4s, or something like that. But you can leave out 4 completely. Does that make sense?

OK, looking at everyone's comments on the next game... @eriknight , while I too like James Mason a lot and would love a Mason survivor game, I too am somewhat skeptical that it would go over all that well. There are also a number of Mason pictures I haven't seen, so I would probably not be the best host for that. I would similarly have to pass on Kurosawa's filmography, though I agree that would be very interesting. If there's an expert of Japanese film out there, please let me know, and I'll gladly hand you over the hosting duties for that game! It seems that everyone's against an Orson survivor game--OK, I can take that off the table. I thought he'd be perfect--he's well-known, has a film ( Citizen Kane) rated as the best movie ever made, is a personal favorite of yours truly, and has a short filmography. So be it, though! tarathian123 , I may be young enough to have been young when Jaws came out (lookin' at you, london777 !), but the movies about which I know the most are 30s-40s Hollywood cinema, if that relieves your concerns about the first point at all. Two: I understand that not everyone is American, and there's no need to make these games U.S.-centric. With that said, I know the most about American cinema; I'm not as well-versed in (e.g.) British or French (or Australian) cinema, though of course I know some things. In other words, while there's no need for this game to be American in its focus, it would be better for someone else to do another country's cinema. I'd only show myself for a fool if I tried. Skipping over 3, on which we both agree... Seems we're not doing an Orson Welles list, but, if we were, I'd hope that, even if you did sit out the Orson game, you'd be back for the next one, if you liked it more. As you know, you and I disagree on Welles (I love his movies), and w you may not like him, most people do, myself included, and his is a very interesting oeuvre to cover. Not saying that your opinion is wrong, merely that this game has to be for everyone. I do not like the majority of Woody Allen movies, but I would not rule out doing a Woody Allen game just because I didn't like it. I'd merely express my thoughts as we go along. I also do not judge an Allen movie a priori just because he and his movies annoy me. I look at every picture with an open mind.

Rope Strangers on a Train The 39 Steps Rear Window The Lady Vanishes Shadow of a Doubt Thank you, Moonlight, but could you just number them out of 5 for us? 5 being the movie you most want off the list, and one being the movie you either like the most or want most to keep on.

It pains me, it really pains me, to see Shadow of a Doubt, my favorite Hitchcock, at the top of this list and only 15 mins. left to this round, but you see all the self-abnegation I put myself through for you nice people? Turning away from my own choices to make this pleasing game for you...

I knew when I started this game that not everyone would like my own favorites, and I'm most interested in what this type of game will determine for the "survivor." It's just that I've posted on this thread before that my three favorites are Shadow of a Doubt, Rear Window, and Strangers on a Train, so I'm just kidding around with all of you.

Orson Welles is still the obvious choice, plus his list of films- not that extensive and Orson Welles is also one of my favorites. Actors 30-40's output? Humphrey Bogart. (fairly limited number of films- seen most three/four times or more). Jimmy Stewart- very possible. Betty Davis (huge list of films though) Hey, Cary Grant is English! Edward G. Robinson, my head would explode trying to make those choices Marilyn Monroe, that would be a squeaker.

Oof (don't even ask me what that's supposed to mean), completely forgot to close the round, as usual... 18 votes Shadow of a Doubt, 16 votes Rope, 10 votes Notorious, 9 votes Rear Window, 8 votes Strangers on a Train, 5 votes North by Northwest, 4 votes The 39 Steps, 3 votes The Lady Vanishes, 3 votes Rebecca, 1 vote Psycho. That means Shadow of a Doubt and Rope are the losers this round. Please excuse me while I change into black mourning attire and rudely paraphrase the words of the Anglican prayer-book: "Film, that is born of Hitchcock, hath but a short time to live in this game, and is full of misery. It cometh up, and is cut down, like a flower; it fleeth as it were a shadow [of a doubt]..." Yes, I did all that for that last pun.

ROUND 13--ERR... ANYONE SUPERSTITIOUS?
WILL CLOSE AT 12 PM TOMORROW
(Reminds me of the time I had to reschedule jury duty, and the lady said, "Only other one we've got open is Friday, October 13." I gave my most winning smile and said, "No worries. I'm not superstitious.")

@eriknight , Bogie would indeed be an interesting choice. I wonder if we could rope mikef6 in for it too... Jimmy Stewart? Maybe, maybe... My favorite actor, and he certainly has partisans who either love him or hate him. I love Eddie G. but am fairly indifferent to Bette Davis. Huge list of films, too, as you say. Cary Grant? Yeah, he's English. Another favorite actor of mine. Actually, in terms of "Englishness" and Orson Welles, if you'll permit an absurd digression... I've talked about a certain film teacher of mine elsewhere on this forum--I've been calling him Pete. Respectfully, Pete knew little about film, and I learned nothing in that class. One day, Pete was lecturing to some students about famous directors. He called me over because he knew I was the resident "old movies" buff. He began by talking about Citizen Kane, which he--the film teacher--had only seen once (!), and then said, "Yeah, and Orson Welles was one of those English directors, like Alfred Hitchcock." After Pete's lecture, I privately told him that Welles was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and raised in Chicago. Pete responded, "Huh. Well, he sounded English." Uh-huh. Yup. Movin' right along, then...
