A lot of stone cold negativity permeates, even in highly rarefied online circles.
Thanks.

How do you judge music? A lot of stone cold negativity permeates, even in highly rarefied online circles.
Thanks. This is an interesting topic worthy of discussion, but I think you're going to have to be more specific about you mean.

This is an interesting topic worthy of discussion, but I think you're going to have to be more specific about you mean. Please give it a go, if you'd like. The first thing that came to mind when I read your OP is the question of, "How do I determine which albums are worthy of purchase?" Thanks to YouTube suggestions, I've got over 800 albums bookmarked. The first thing I do, before I even listen to an album, is check to see if it's available for purchase on Amazon.com in the CD format. If the album is unavailable, or only available in the MP3 format, I skip it and move on to the next one. I've noticed that sometimes I first judge the music subconsciously - specifically I've noticed that my head moves if the album is good. Once I found myself saying out loud, "I like this", and then I realized that my head had already been moving for several seconds. Another indicator of quality is if I actually sit and listen to the entire album in one sitting. If I find myself getting bored or distracted part of the way through, it's likely to be eliminated from further consideration. Finally, I find it sometimes helps when I compare album candidates against each other. Sometimes an album doesn't seem so impressive on its own, but when compared to the competition, it really stands out. I'm not sure if that's what you wanted when you started this thread, but that's my contribution to this topic.

Lots of them. I've created threads on this board that cover each of the last six years. Here are my favorite 2015, 2016-ish, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 albums.

WEll for one thing, if it sounds like someone could make fun of me for listening to it. Then i will not listen to it or like it. That's the first thing.
From then on, if i like it then i will judge it as good music.

I'm enjoying reading this, thanks for the links. Are you a metal fan? I like a lot of punk music, some of it hardcore.

I use my bullshit detector. That's a serious answer.
I have the ability to know who means it and who doesn't. Obvious examples are Joy Division meant it, Bon Jovi does not.
And pop can mean it. Donna Summer, The Carpenters, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Altered Images, and hundreds of others were serious about their pop confections. Paula Abdul, Vanilla Ice, Tatu, Justin Bieber...my detector red-lines.
If it's real from the heart and soul, it's good, no matter what genre. If it is bullshit I just can't enjoy it.

I do enjoy some punk music as well. Since you like punk, you might want to check out SAVAGE MASTER, who are featured in my 2019 thread. They have a bit of a punk feel to their music.

I bought SAVAGE MASTER's third album "Myth, Magic and Steel". I just updated the link to the full album in my thread, as the original playlist I linked to has since been taken private.

Interesting question. For me, I guess it depends on what kind of music it is, and/or its intent. In some cases, I might just like how it sounds or how it makes me feel. In other cases, I might not like how it sounds, but still impressed with the talent and expertise that went into it. Simple pop songs are a good example of the former - I love Shake It Off, but it doesn't impress me, at least not from a musical standpoint. Miles Davis is good example of the latter - it impresses me, but I don't like listening to it. But in all cases, if it doesn't move me in any way, I won't give it a high rating.
