Awful. Awful. Awful. But its not all bad.
Terrible story, terrible acting, all over the place. The story was waaaaay over convoluted, way too many characters, way too much bouncing around from dumb idea to dumber idea, way over stuffed, and all needlessly.
But it does excel at SFX and the fight scenes. In that regard its amazing.
Below this line SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS!!!
So the story starts with Kong in a virtual reality cage on Skull Island. Why? Skull Island was already all the cage he needed. Were they worried that he was suddenly going to go for a swim, something he hadn't done his entire life? And for some reason, even though Kong knows he's in a cage, he cant escape it.
They're afraid to take him off the island because Godzilla will "sense" him. Why? He couldn't sense him before?
They agree to take him off the island for the stupidest of reasons; that there might be an energy source inside the hollow earth? Hollow earth? What?! Where'd that come from? And what energy source? And why do they need that energy source that they cant seem to get anywhere else? Oh wait, it gets better!
They take Kong to the hollow earth! Yep! And the imaginary energy source is all over the place there. Kong floats around in a zero gravity environment. I couldn't help but laugh! Oh wait, it gets better still!
They get there in what can only be described as space ships! And there's no explanation as to how this super duper level of science exists. Its just there. The entire MCU and Star Wars combined had more plausible vehicles and science than these, and I'm including GOTG! Why do they need these space ships? Because there's a gravity inversion in the hollow earth that will kill you if you don't fly there in these space ships. Oh wait some more, it gets better still!
Down at the hollow earth Kong finds a giant axe that he can use as a weapon and a throne he can chill on. Yep. Kong has an axe. An axe. Let that sink in.
Later Godzilla breathes his fire breathe so hard that he creates a massive tunnel all the way from Hong Kong down into the hollow earth. Yep. That happens. Kong and pals travel from the hollow earth up to Hong Kong through that tunnel. Wait, I thought they needed the space ships because of some gravity thing? Nope, they just needed to Godzilla that shit because story.
The energy source they were looking for? They didn't even get it to the surface! They had a mechanical spider send a signal of its composition to the surface and at the surface the bad guys merely duplicate the energy source. What?!
What was the energy source for? You guessed it! MECHAGODZILLA is in this movie. That was the bad guys solution to killing giant monsters like Godzilla and Kong. To create a giant monster made of metal that apparently could not be powered by any energy source we have on earth, so they had to resort to sending people to a mythical place that no one knows even exists.
Its like a said I'm going to build a nuclear bomb to stop all the other nuclear bombs, but my nuclear bomb is so special that we need energy from Narnia to power it, and I'm going to build space ships to send you to Narnia. You in?
Whats that you ask? Would a small nuclear reactor built into MechaGodzilla not work? Oh. Good idea. We already have those. But no! Building space ships and sending you to Narnia is way cooler so we'll do that.
I understand that these movies are about giant monsters, so all laws of physics are already out the window, but this was just ridiculous. It was too much. I wanted Thanos to show up and snap his fingers. And if that had actually happened, I wouldn't have been surprised.
But the pros are that the SFX were amazing and the fights were off the hook. best fights of the franchise actually! For those reasons I would even watch it again. So its not all bad.
Recommended, as long as you leave your thinking cap in another room. Enjoy!

I'm shocked that you are shocked that a movie about giant light belching lizards fighting giant monkeys would have crazy scenes in it.😂 It's like you people don't have a clue what you're watching. As for the Hollow Earth and spaceships... Again, what the fuck did you think was going to happen.😂Hilarious.

Skull Island’s environment became unstable. That was why they put a dome around it.

All filler and some killer. Got it.
I would love to see a movie like this with an amazing plot, story and acting. With an awesome fight.

To add:
-Godzilla was active during Kong: Skull Island, so apparently no, Godzilla couldn't sense Kong before
-Hollow Earth comes from Godzilla: King of the Monsters
-if Godzilla was in the habit of taking requests, I'm sure the humans would have asked him to burn the tunnel for them
-Mechagodzilla was supposed to be controlled by the Japanese Prince impersonator ala Pacific Rim, but they weren't counting on it being hijacked by Kinky Dora. You kind of present it like they just built a giant monster and crossed their fingers like BvS
-if the science is advanced enough to build Mechagodzilla, why not some spaceships?
Your review highlights the movie is more convoluted than it needed to be, but it's mostly because it had to tie back to three other movies which you may not have seen(?).

No, I saw the previous movies, and yes they suspended disbelief too, but this movie didn't just suspend disbelief. It smacked it, bent it over, and had its way with it! I didn't think I had to mention that the science was too over the top to build Mechagodzilla having already mentioned the spaceships. And as for it being controlled by someone, that was way over the top too. At that point why not just make it a programmable robot? Or a have a pilot in it? Or any number of things that would have been more easy to accept. And an unknown energy source that they couldn't have known about because it comes rom a place that no ones every been to that's as mythical as My Little Pony's homeworld? Any decent writer of science fiction/fantasy could have come up with much more plausible explanations that needed fewer leaps of logic. And this movie is full of those leaps. Too many. Many worlds in movies (or TV, novels, comics, videogames, whatever...) have suspension of disbelief written into their very fabric. But then they re-write the rules as such that they make sense within those boundaries. This movie didn't do that. Instead it just did "whatever". "Whatever" doesn't come across as plausible. It comes across as messy. This movie is a mess. This movie already has suspension of disbelief in the giant monsters. To throw in spaceships, and giant robots, and hollow earth, and anti gravity, and holes from Hong Kong to the middle of the earth, and axes the size of buildings... its just too much. After while its just stupid. All this movie needed was a scenario whereby the two monsters meet and fight. Simple. All this other stuff and all the characters was overkill.

I'm laughing now thinking about all the awful movies you must watch and are okay with because "fuck it, 'anything goes' is okay! There shouldn't be any verisimilitude whatsoever in movies! Whatever!" I guess you would've been okay with Pinocchio showing up as a giant monster too. Why not? Its already about a light belching giant lizard who fights a giant monkey. Throw it in. And don't forget the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They're good to go too.

Skull Island’s environment became unstable. That was why they put a dome around it. Y'know how to fix that problem? Write the story so that the island didn't become unstable. In other words, just leave it like it was in the previous movie. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

None of the things you've complained about are unrealistic in a monster movie since from the very first Godzilla reboot movie in 2014 titans were speculated to have come from under the earth. If you're not good at getting the hint then that's on you not the writers. There was so much foreshadowing into that.

Len, I'm just not understanding your gripe with spaceships and Hollow Earth in a ridiculous monster movie already. It's like complaining that zombies in movies can't find a decent deodorant shop within a mile while they're roaming around aimlessly looking for human flesh all day.

5/10.
1. I hate the subplot with Eleven from “Stranger Things” and the black Joe Rogan. It was convoluted and I felt nothing for those characters. No development.
2. Why can’t monster movies learn from “Jurassic Park”? There is literally a blueprint for an excellent monster film. Build up, and then build tension. This film feels like a kid with ADHD wrote it.
3. I feel like I’m watching a “Transformers” movie. Going from one location to the next with little explanation.
4. The fights are the only good things about this movie. But even then, they look like a PS5 game. Excellent graphics, but too computer polished for me. I’d prefer animatronics and cgi mapping over the animatronics. Some creativity please.
5. Overall, it’s too fast paced with no cohesive plot. I don’t care about any of the characters, and the stakes don’t feel as big as they should. It felt like when they were fighting I was watching “The Rock” vs “Stone Cold”. Instead of what should feel like a horrific fight between two titans with the world at stake and people afraid for their lives.
Popcorn fun. I’ll probably watch it again on TNT next year when it’s on cable.
PS. The deaf girl and Kongs relationship is the best part. She’s by far the best actor.

But that is the fundamental problem with Hollywood. They are turning cinema into TV series. I shouldn’t have to watch 3 films before I watch this. You can watch “Rocky III” and never have watched the first two and still enjoy it for what it is. You can sit down and watch “Godfather Part II” and never watch “Godfather” and enjoy it. Of course you’ll get more out of it, if you see the original. But it’s not required. The MCU is ruining cinema. All these universes think they have to become a connected saga.

If the special effects were done using people in suits destroying a model city instead of that CGI crap maybe I'd have been interested.

Or at least animatronics with cgi to just make it look smoother (like Jurassic Park). I just hate how lazy Hollywood is. “Let’s just make it 100% CGI” They are creatively bankrupt.
