- Godzilla as protagonist works as he was the best 'monster lead' of the 3 previous films.
- The little girl was very good & most welcome nuance, esp. as lead expositional about Kong's pov.
- Their 2 primary battles, at sea & Hong Kong were great. I liked Godzilla quickly catching on trying to drown Kong, & rightly so. HK all lit up was a great venue for dramatic prime time fighting- we could see everything going on, unlike G2014 SanFran in its darkened ash.
- I really appreciated the animalistic nature of their fighting. Too often it seems these things turn into wrestling brawls with stupid curb stomp things for cheap thrills - both monsters here were fighting with their guts, guile, & anything they could adapt from their surroundings.
- The Hollow Earth angle was probably the most true to this terrestrial MonsterVerse, so I was fully onboard.
- As a positive, the lead villainess was an empty suit, for eye candy alone. Having about 25 seconds of achievement with her drone, getting offed nice & quickly was fun & actually surprising.
-
- I wish there was more showing & less telling. The opening act was far too expositional, about stuff via jargon I was barely interested in. By this 4th giant film in this series, we should be capping & paying off previous ideas... not creating all new &/or uninteresting ones.
- Holy cow, talk about giving Godzilla the shaft here. Not only does this Godzilla not align much at all whatsoever with 2014's far more lucid protector characterization (one I surprisingly admired), he's both bully & loser here. Rampaging about, he gets to 'kill' Kong, while being a jerk about it. Then he 'loses' to Mecha, only to be saved by Kong. How the mighty have fallen indeed.
I was hoping to see tame 2014 Godzilla get riled up by a combative Kong... not temper tantrum Godzilla looking to break everything in sight.
- Not only does New York never see Kong, Japan doesn't see its Godzilla here either. Hong Kong, I wonder if it's to appease Chinese audiences like so many blockbusters these days.
- The loss of life in these films is barely registered. HK being decimated, not quite certain everyone had moments to run in time. All the naval ships earlier on being blasted like toys... meh? lols
1. Kong: Skull Island
2. Godzilla 2014
3. Godzilla vs. Kong
4. King of the Monsters
