Kershaw was once regarded as the #1 'Prep' (High School) pitcher in baseball in 2006 when he was selected with the 7th overall pick in the draft
This year -
Andrew Painter has been regarded as the #1 'Prep' (High School) pitcher in the game who just went in the 1st Round
I can just see him - 'Painting the corners' of the strike zone like Picasso
Get it?

Brendan Beck from Stanford is the best pitcher in the draft. Says on baseballreference.com that he's also a 3rd baseman and a CF
Is he another Ohtani?

Nah. Just a pitcher. His strikeout to walks ratio is nuts: 143: 26.

Painter was rated by some as the top prep pitcher in the draft. Here's all the top rated prep pitchers from 2000 - 2016
2000 - Matt Harrington 2001 - Gavin Floyd 2002 - Chris Gruler 2003 - Ryan Harvey 2004 - Mark Rogers 2005 - Chris Volstad 2006 - Clay Kershaw 2007 - Jarrod Parker 2008 - Ethan Martin 2009 - Matt Hobgood 2010 - Jameson Taillon 2011 - Dylan Bundy 2012 - Max Fried 2013 - Kohl Stewart 2014 - Brady Aiken 2015 - Kolby Allard 2016 - Ian Anderson
As you can see, the success rate isn't that great. One Star, a few solid arms, a lot of mediocrity, and two of the worst draft picks of all time (Harrington and Aiken). HS arms are such a crapshoot. I'm not wishing "bust" on anyone but if a was a GM, I would never mess with a HS pitcher.

Gavin Floyd ruled his 1st year here
I'll never forget his Mom & Pop in the stands cheering him on during his 1st appearance......

Nice trade there. Floyd won 63 games for the ChiSox. The pitcher the got back, Freddy Garcia, won 62 fewer.
In fairness, the 2001 draft was shit. Other than Joe Mauer and Mark Teixeira (taken right after Floyd), there wasn't much in the 1st.

Sox seem to be in good shape at shortstop right now, but Xander can't play forever. Or can he? π€π€π€

I fully expect 'The Painter' to thumb his nose at the University of Florida.... And then start 'Painting' Masterpieces at CBP ............
According to mlb.com - 23 players since the draft started in 1965 have made the jump right from being drafted to the MLB
Say hello to #24 - 'The Painter'
'The Painter' went 6-1 with a .038 ERA striking out 93 batters in 47 innings during his senior season
