Aunt May the walking cadaver ran her course years ago, and no one cared Ultimate Aunt May was only in her 40s and attractive.
Tomei is in her 50s, she the appropriate age for an Aunt to a teenager.

I absolutely love the hot aunt May idea. It was brilliant. It's a dumb idea if in the movie, Aunt May does nothing but spend all day sitting at home. Because what kind of hot, single woman would spend all day sitting at home when she could get plenty of dates? |

Plot twist: Aunt May actually works nights as a stripper just to earn enough money to feed her and Peter. All that nice stuff in their apartment were gifts from her ex-boyfriend wrestler, whom she broke up with after some domestic violence issues. She is currently taking time off from dating because of this.

Everyobody's aunt was sexy to some non-blood related member of the opposite (or same) sex at some point in their lives. Heck, Aunt May HAD to get Ben's attention, somehow, right? So yes, it is okay for Aunt May to be attractive.
