This is what bums me out about this though. The one MCU movie that seems as if it’s going to try something new gets panned. Now they have every reason to return to making predictable clones like Black Widow and Shang Chi. Maybe this movie deserves to be rotten, but I doubt it’s simply because it deviates from the norm. It might just be a bad movie regardless. But that’s not going to be the take away. I love Marvel, but after 25 movies the formula, while successful, is starting to get a bit stale. They need movies that shake it up, even if some end up misfiring. Shang Chi wasn't predictable it dragged a bit towards the end but it wasn't predictable. Perhaps not predictable, but it did have that third act problem I mentioned where the big CGI spectacle was out of sync with the rest of the movie and clearly a studio mandate. And also some of the cringiest “Marvel humor” in the franchise with Fake Mandarin and that bottled water chick. Personally I thought Shang Chi was one of their worst- but I know I’m in the minority there.

Maybe not a CGI battle, but there's usually some huge climactic action scene at the end of majority of action-adventure movies.

I’m strangely more curious to see the movie now. I was half-expecting it to be heralded on the level of Black Panther, but seeing an MCU movie with this kind of reception makes me wonder what exactly it did wrong.

But a good action adventure movie will make sure the action in the climax, however over the top or fantastical, serves the story. Not the other way around. Black Widow for example just comes to a complete halt to do the obligatory pre-planned action sequence and it fucks up the thematic climax in the process. And Shang Chi’s giant monster battle came out of thin blue sky with almost no set up, completely overshadowing the actual story driven conflict between Shang and Wenwu. I cared about Shang and his father, but had zero reason to care about some dumb pointless monster battling a dragon. I actually don’t think this has been a problem in the MCU until Phase Four though.

Shang and Wenwu was never going to be the main story for the entire movie and actually I'm starting to appreciate the big monster fight more and more as this thread goes on. Yes it was over the top and dragged a bit, but it gave Wenwu's obsession with resurrecting his wife a bigger purpose. The monsters were well designed and the soul sucking creatures were just great. It was a bit jumping from one place to another too much but I liked it.

I was going to watch Eternals anyway. It's funny that they've made the fat black superhero gay too. They threw a lot at him.

This movie has opened already? With all the death laurels it must tanked the box office? Was really that bad? Because I wanted to see it. Damn. no, boxoffice will be relatively fine , but not a huge hit

It's either just another formulaic MCU movie, or it strayed too far from the MCU formula and should have stuck closer. The negative reviews have led me to believe both these things must be true.

59% is rotten now? I thought you had to get to under 50% to be rotten?

It would have been lower if it wasn't released under Marvel banner.

I have no dog in this hunt (except for maybe Doctor Strange, I'm pretty much done with the MCU after ENDGAME), but it's my understanding that the "anti-woke" brownshirts really have their knives out for this film... You know: female director, strong female characters, non-white characters, gay characters, etc.
Yada yada yada.

I’ve seen posts from a few of them blaming its reception on the fact that Chloe Zhao is Chinese.

Is this the first MCU movie to ever dip below 60%? Even if just momentarily?

So the low critic ratings couldn't be attributed to that.

It’s really tiresome trying to keep track of all the pieces of entertainment those people claim to have problems with.
