Well, there goes Thor:TDW's crown.
Said it before and I'll say it again: Yes the MCU formula can sometimes get tiring, but it's a formula that works. Breaking away from that formula is always going to be risky. Seems like this movie took that risk and it didn't pay off.

The one MCU movie that seems as if it’s going to try something new gets panned. Now they have every reason to return to making predictable clones like Black Widow and Shang Chi. Maybe this movie deserves to be rotten, but I doubt it’s simply because it deviates from the norm. It might just be a bad movie regardless. But that’s not going to be the take away. I love Marvel, but after 25 movies the formula, while successful, is starting to get a bit stale. They need movies that shake it up, even if some end up misfiring.

Having every movie be “good” starts to lose its meaning once they began to get repetitive.

The MCU formula works, it would be foolish to completely break away from it imo. But... I do want them to get a lot more creative in how they implement that formula, put in as much variety and permutations they can to that formula. Let me put it this way. MCU movies are cheeseburgers and they're known for making very good cheeseburgers. If they suddenly started making sushi instead, that's going to be very risky and potentially disastrous. This is the mistake that DCEU keeps making. They have burgers for movies but they keep trying to market them as steaks. The MCU embraces the burger and creates cheeseburgers instead, but that shouldn't stop them from making different variations like bacon cheeseburgers, veggie cheeseburgers, jalapeno cheeseburgers, mushroom quarter pounders, etc. |

I’m not saying they should suddenly make experimental films or movies of a different genre. The classic action adventure story can have a lot of variation. In Marvel’s case, I suppose it’s mainly the tone I would have them mix up. And just let different directors put their stamp on things without the copy/paste humor and obligatory over the top CGI battles in the third act that are, more recently, so clearly planned out before the script is even written.

Shang Chi wasn't predictable it dragged a bit towards the end but it wasn't predictable. |
