And "X-Men: Apocalypse" costed less, and outgrossed it. So good. Music to my ears. So? That film didn't have a disadvantage of coming out when the outbreak was happening.

Chloé Zhao Reckons With ‘Eternals’ Dividing Fans: Its Style ‘Made People Uncomfortable’
I wish she'd be more specific because honestly...I haven't thought about it until now, but the style for Eternals actually strikes me as very "Snyders Justice League" you know. Like visually it looks good but kind of drab as if the colors have been sucked out a little bit. Ive only watched it the once so I could be off the mark but thinking back that's the vibe I remember getting. Which isn't necessarily bad, but i don't think that aesthetic was the reason it was disliked. It's at least not the reason I put it middle of the pack or so among the MCU. I think there was just a tad too much going on with both story and characters for most people to get fully invested in, even in a 2-1/2 hr movie.

It has some great elements to it (I'm in the minority of people who liked it quite a bit), but I can see why it wasn't a mainstream success. Like you said, there's just too much going on. Maybe the muted color palate hurt it some, and certainly the lack of iconic characters, and the deviants (as well as the celestial at the end, which for all intents and purposes was just a giant mindless robot) didn't exactly make compelling adversaries. But at the end of the day the film lacked focus.
Is Eternals about Thena's 'Mahd Wy'ry' (love that term, by the way)? Is it about alien beings attempting to aid humanity in its everlasting fight against its own nature? Is it about those same beings trying to find their place in the world? Is it about the love between Sersi and Ikaris spanning the centuries? Is it about space gods and their morally ambiguous scheme to propagate and destroy life throughout the universe? The answer to all of these questions is yes, and that's just too much for one film to explore properly. As I said elsewhere on the board, it should've been a streaming show. If it focuses solely on Ikaris's inner conflict regarding his mission and his love for Sersi, or even a broader story where all of them know their true mission and have to decide for themselves whether to help people, ignore them, or try to dominate them, it's a much more compelling story. Just drop the deviants altogether, you don't need to follow the comics to the letter. The deviants are only there to explain why the Eternals are being retconned into MCU canon this late in the game. It would've been just as easy to say, "The Celestials forbade us to get involved in human conflicts, period. They sent us here to observe them, to guide them, but told us not to intervene in any conflict, no matter how dire." And the conflict between the Eternals over the years could revolve around some Eternals breaking those rules. (Hence some of their exploits becoming myths of good or evil, over the millennia.) Tell me that isn't a better story.

Rewatched this recently. The flaws are much more apparent on a second viewing. So many good ideas it doesn’t fully commit to. Lots of really interesting world building ruined by awkward spoonfed exposition.
Still better than the bottom tier MCU movies though. There are others that were more deserving of being “rotten”.

Wasn't he beaten in the street last summer? He needs a wingman.

This seems like a random thread to bump just to post something about one of the actors.

Don't think any MCU movie deserves to be rotten. Even the worst MCU movie is generally head and shoulders above your usual summer blockbuster. That said, I agree that The Eternals was better than some other MCU movies. Heck, I enjoyed it more than Black Widow.

When Aquaman was at 60% I said a fresh tomato is a fresh tomato. It's fresh until it isn't. There's no shame in a 60% tomato score tbh. Totally agreed. The person with the lowest mark in their graduating class is still a graduate! It ain't no non-graduation.

It’s wild that the first “rotten” MCU movie was made by someone who recently made a Best Picture winner.

Honestly I think Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 3 and Ant Man and the Wasp deserve a rotten rating. Just my opinion though. I’m not a big Shang Chi fan either. And yeah, Eternals is definitely better than Black Widow.
