Ok, first @screamingtreefrogs I wanna say I THINK ALI is the GREATEST BOXER....B-O-X-E-R of all time. Greatest athlete...boy is that a loaded hard question, it's so debatable.
Ok with that out the way my friend:
No doubt, no doubt.
Here is the thing, I LIKE TYSON. He is in my top 5 greatest boxers list. I got him over a punk like Floyd. Tysons career honestly can bring tears to my eyes. I dont believe he was guilty of rape. I think Cus dying was a shame, and hurt his soul. He had a chance to be the best.
Brother, youre preaching to the choir. Im with you, Don King is a fn scumbag. F*** him, seriously. I am WITH YOU.
I've seen them, hell, I even dvr'd his entire Adult swim cartoon series, Mike Tyson's Mysteries. SERIOUSLY GOOD STUFF. I think his rape case was bs, apparently, they didnt even have A RAPE CASE DEFENSE ATTORNEY! Like wtf man. No, Tyson got a raw deal, and I respect what he did.
Again, im with you.
And again, I agree. I said I think he got hosed in the Buster Douglas fight. Someone tell me you didnt count to 12. BS, he knocked Buster out. My father, said the same thing. Tyson is so under-rated, but I do got Ali as the greatest BOXER of all time. What he did was amazing. He beat a Foreman, 40-0. IDK if Tyson ever beat someone as ruthless as Foreman was, this wasnt the "grill loving" id have a beer with this man Foreman. This was a monster.
I like Tyson, I just like Ali a little more. BTW, ty for having a civil convo, it's so nice when we can all have a conversation without name calling etc man.

And did I say "athlete"? I don't know if Ali could have beat Tyson in the 40 yard dash. Who would have done better in the Decathlon. You are basing your "overrated" tag on his five losses, then prattle on about Tyson. The 1927 Yankees lost a couple games to the 103 loss Red Sox. They must be overrated. talk about being over dramatic but.... interesting point you bring up about baseball. what's your opinion of a 100 win team regarded as one of the best of All-Time; however bows out in the playoffs? Seattle Mariners and I'm a die hard Phils fan comes to mind. Yes - I'd say they were vastly overrated for not being able to 'close the deal' ala Ali in 5 fights As far as my Tyson/Ali comparison - I bring this up because it seems a lot of people easily dismiss Tyson as one of the great Heavyweights ever but just seem to rattle on about Ali being the greatest ever - not only the greatest Heavyweight ever - but the greatest boxer ever - and in some instances the greatest 'athlete' ever. as i said in my original post - i'm not dismissing his legacy. what he did for race in the country. for political topics just as the Draft. but is Ali a case where we were looking for a 'Hero' so to speak? maybe we built this guy larger than life? and i can make an argument I'd take prime Tyson in there to knock him out just like Frazier took him to school? is Ali a creation of us wanting a 'hero'? he did have 5 losses. did Superman have 5 losses? Ali wasn't a hero during his career, except for blacks. And even then. I had lost of black friends who hated Ali and prayed for Foreman to knock his block off. To most people, he was "Draft Dodger" of "Supermouth". The hagiography of Muhammad Ali didn't begin until sometime afterwards. Probably the Holmes fight. As far as the Ali v. Tyson argument, we will never know. I do think Mike was the harder hitter. The pro-Ali argument for me is the quality of opposition. Ali Fought liston, Frazier, Norton and Foreman, all among the greatest HW ever. TYson fought Evander Holyfield (always more of a light HW) and Lennox Lewis (there's your underrated fighter). Ali would have broke out the Kryptonite glove and knocked Clark Kent back to Planed X or wherever the hell he came from.

He was really popular in Britain I think despite beating Henry Cooper twice, one of our most loved heavyweights who sadly passed away 5 years ago (I once saw him in a bank, I nodded to him, I think he thought I was about to say something to him but I didn't know what to say and walked out. Cooper that is, not Ali obviously). I've watched loads of interviews with Ali (love listening to him speak), and he often said he was treated better in Britain than he was back at home.

Destroyed him in 2 rounds. They both fought Tony Tucker and both went 12 rounds, but Lennox Lewis at least had Tucker on the canvas, Tyson never did. Lennox Lewis destroyed him in seconds. Riddick Bowe fared even worse, got bossed by him both fights before Golota inexplicably threw a combination to his bollocks to get himself disqualified both time late in the fight. I think one of those fights resulted a brawl in the ring after.

Well I don't rate Riddick Bowe that highly so you can probably guess my answer to that. Lewis and Ali, I think I've said this before on the old forum, but I don't think Lewis would have beaten the speedy Ali from before the suspension. I think Ali would have got a knock out late on in that fight or won on points, Lewis had a slightly suspect chin. Now after the suspension, against the Ali that fought Frazier and Foreman, I give Lewis a chance, I really do. I think his devastating jab and massive reach is going to give Ali big problems when Ali is without that speed.

An icon for race barriers back in they day? Absolutely. Larger than life when it came to international controversies like the War? Absolutely. As an athlete? He was 56-5. ![](http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e41/imdbv2/imdbsmileys/odd.gif) That's the greatest boxer of All-Time? ![](http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e41/imdbv2/imdbsmileys/none.gif) A 21 year old Tyson without Givens and Don King in his ear would have put him to bed in 30 seconds. There really aren't many or any HWs who are comparable. I'd also recommend watching Foreman fights pre-the rumble in the jungle. He was knocking out better fighters than Tyson was, quicker and easier. Goes to show what a great achievement it was when Ali beat him, post suspension as well. You wanna know who would have won out of Tyson and Ali? Well I think Ali already answered that question when he beat a superior version of Tyson in Foreman.

Foreman arrived in the ring using a zimmer frame and knocked out Michael Moorer.
If Tyson hadn't gone to prison, they were talking about Foreman fighting him, and Foreman would have knocked him spark out too. No question.
Tyson ended up on his arse so often, he should have sold advertising rights to the soles of his boots.

No question. ah!!! that's right. moorer was dominating that whole fight and gramps had a couple of lucky punches and it was a made for TV story as he fell to his knees in the corner to capture the strap. how can i forget. great story. tyson vs. foreman intrigues me. i'm thinking foreman goes all 'bonecrusher smith' on tyson for 12 rounds and hugs him to death and tries to look for a knockout punch ala moorer late rounds. kind of like a bear laying on fox for 12 rounds (get it - clumsy oaf tying up a sly one)

Don't get hung up on record. That dopey Bill Parcells quote -- "You are what your record says you are" -- is the most idiotic thing ever said by a human. Joe Calzaghe ended his career with a record of 46-0...and the seven year old little girl up the block I fear more than Slappy Joe. Ali is overrated because the biggest sporting event in the history of the world, the most highly anticipated sporting event ever....uhh, Ali didn't win it. He lost. Joe Frazier won the world's biggest sporting event....Muhammad Ali lost the world's biggest sporting event. A loser of that magnitude can never be the greatest at anything...except greatest loser of a big event. And Ali ties Tom "18 And 1" Brady for that title.

But Ali won the Thriller in Manila and The Rumble in the Jungle. Both by KO. If you win an event that doesn't rhyme, is it really worth winning it at all?

@manlystanley Ive been saying this about Foreman.
I think the problem is....look at George now. Who hasnt owned his "grill" at one time. He looks like a lovable teddy bear now, a guy you wanna cook steaks with, watch a sporting event and have a beer with.
BACK in his day...he was a guy if you saw walking...youd turn the other fn way. He is the guy who said hed like to kill someone in the ring. He went into the Ali fight...40-0.....never lost a dang fight. He left...40-1, and Foreman said it changed him and he was never the same after that fight. Ali screwed his psyche, I remember watching stories, biographies on it and Ali saying,"THAT'S IT, THAT'S ALL YOU GOT GEORGE" and Foreman in his head said,"yea, that's pretty much all I got."
People WERE LEGIT SCARED for Ali to fight Foreman. They thought he could LEGIT DIE. Foreman did change his entire image, again, who doesnt love that Foreman grill and how many copy cats it has made. Honestly, it is nearly a "microwave" type item in the kitchen now. Hell I own 3.
SO people sadly dont remember this was a guy who was Tyson in the day. Foreman was a scary Tyson in his day, but I still think Tyson deserves more love.
@screamingtreefrogs
After Ali did, Foreman said his psyche was never the same after Ali. He wasnt the same boxer, youre forgetting that imo. His psyche was crushed and after Ali, he was never the same guy.
No, but go watch Foreman before the Ali fight/after. It's literally two different fighters.
Of course, it's all speculation.
Two of them was when he shouldnt have been in the ring, and like I said, I can make a case neither of those Spinks fights should have happen. In the end I see "2" or "3" legit losses.
1. Frazier (Avenged that loss twice)
2. Norton (Avenged it legit once....the other was so shady).
3. Spinks (Past his prime)
Holmes and Berbick was the classic, a boxer not hanging his boots on top. We have seen it in sports time and time again. Not everyone can ride off into the sunset like (Different sport here) Elway/Manning/Bettis
Or leave with a win, like Faber did his last fight.
Ali should have never fought Spinks, but once he did, he should have quit, that was imho should have been his last fight. The last 2 was a sad shell of a man trying to squeeze the last few drops he had, and it cost him his quality of life.
Also screaming, ty for starting this thread. It has probably been one of the most fun conversations and legit sharing of ideas without everyone screaming at each other in a long time. Really fun thread man.

Remember, Ali won the Foreman fight by using the rope-a-dope tactic. He knew that he couldn't punch with Foreman so he wore him down. Now, that is smart and nobody has mentioned how smart of a fighter Ali was. I also think he was one of the best conditioned heavyweights I have ever seen.
