I do wanna ask one thing for @manlystanley and @screamingtreefrogs
Can we all agree....Floyd Mayweather IS NOT the best boxer? I know he is undefeated, and I do hear some calling him the greatest, but come on.
(OK I lied, I got two).
Also, apparently, Floyd-McGregor fight is getting close to inking a deal. IMHO, this isnt good for boxing. I think UFC is over-taking boxing over in popularity (And UFC seems to give fans the fights they want) do we really need McGregor Vs Floyd?
JC, I know a little OT from Ali but I am very curious what you two think of Floyd and his legacy/McGregor-Floyd fight.

I'll say the same thing about Mayweather as I'll say about Sugar Ray Robinson, Ali, Roy Jones Jnr and Frank Bruno. If someone wants to say he is the greatest of all time, I'm not going to argue with them.
If you look at some of the guys he has beaten and what some of them have gone onto do, like Alvarez for example, then you can not really argue with his record.
Obviously though, that McGregor fight is a joke fight, a circus. It will be the easiest payday of his life assuming they are fighting Queensberry rules.

I don't get the intrigue unless simple takedowns - without striking are allowed. Money is going to toy with him. Same can be said if it was in the Octagon - Mayweather wouldn't stand a chance in that environment. They've got to have something up their sleeves. They're both businessman. Straight boxing match is a lopsided borefest.

I think he dodged Pac for years - that being said - I think Pac was juicing and I don't blame Floyd. What do you think about a Floyd Mayweather vs. Pernell 'Sweet Pea' Whitaker fight? But yes - I agree with your sentiment - I love defensive boxers like 'Sweat Pea' - and believe he was truly great - but I'd hardly consider him - like Floyd to be the 'best ever'.

I wouldn't have wanted any part of that either.....

It doesn't matter how great you are as long as you are good and entertaining.. That is what brings the viewers and of course the money, and a platform to talk about your ideology. this in an interesting statement...... so are you stating Ali was not the 'best of the best' but maybe perhaps he knew how to talk the talk and was a good businessman and salesman and knew how to entertain the masses and keep their attention and stay in the limelight for years?

well yes and no.
sometimes people are born with charisma that attract the masses, others are doing it purely for the want of fame and fortune - and use tried and tested marketing tecniques.
I doubt he was that claver enough to be the latter (unless his agent told him what to do and how to fight and what to say)- However he was a MR ' I M THE BIG MAN' - Something that goes down well in the US - not in my Nation (UK).

A bit of both runie. He famously said, when he was a teenager he saw a wrestler called "Gorgeous George" promoting a fight (not to be confused of course with former MP George Galloway who is also known as Gorgeous George). Anyway, this Gorgeous George fella was showing off, he was saying "I'm better looking than you, I'm stronger than you, I'm better at wrestling, I'm gonna kick your ass" or something along those lines. Anyway he decided to buy a ticket, just in the hope that the other guy would whoop George's arse. When he got there the arena was sold out, all full of other people hoping George would lose. He did a rough mental calculation of how much they had made in ticket sales, and he thought to himself "damn, this is a good idea!". And the rest, as they say, is history.

Ok, first, ty for both your comments on Floyd.
Ill be honest, I think Floyd didnt help boxing, at all. I also agree, I think he ran from Pacman. The time we got fight one, that should have been fight two or heck three. I dont like the man, I just dont. Ali, I watch his interviews, he was cocky but had this...likable factor. Floyd has this,"me me me, I I I," factor. Ill say one thing, I respect how he doesnt have a promoter. I dont understand why some boxers at least dont pick up his business mind, I cant stand him, but I gotta be real, his business sense is that of incredible. I cant hate on that, but his fights....his actual fights.....ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
I agree McGregor Vs Floyd will be a joke. If this happens (It will be another massive blow to boxing) im gonna say f it and pick Conor. Now will McGregor win, 99.999999999999999999 percent chance of no, but I just cant stand Floyd. So the only chance is, McGregor getting in a one-two. The only chance I got is age....McGregor in his prime, Floyd is 40. Would I bet a dollar on McGregor, no, will I probably be 150 percent wrong, no doubt, but Im gonna hope. I just would love Floyds entire legacy to go down on an MMA guy, you know the comedy that be?
Seriously, I know the chances are slim to none, but imagine IF McGregor knocked out Floyd. (The chances are slim, I know guys). I think I would be laughing for a week straight.

Yeah Mayweather is not likeable in the slightest. But I can't knock his record or his talent for that matter. Ali was very likeable because he had charisma, the cockiness was fine because he was witty with it, if you are funny you can get away with it (besides, it was all a bit exaggerated on his part anyway, that much was obvious, although I imagine his haters at the time probably fell for it).

I was never Cassius Clay's biggest fan but as far as boxing skills go he was on a another level to Tyson and would have given him a boxing lesson. If they fought 10 times Clay wins 9 of them. I'd say Tyson at best would have a punchers chance.

Michael Jordan gets my vote. Interesting. Of course - Ive never seen Wilt play if we're just talking NBA here. But.... How do your argue? I think he's the greatest NBA player in History and one can make the argument that basketball is a very 'athletic' sport. Now as i pointed out in another thread - I think Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders are incredible 2 sport athletes - but are they the best at their sport in either? One can argue Jordan is the best in one of the most athletic sports out there.

Do you think it's a little harsh of me to say Ali was a glorified Hector Camacho, Vinny Pazienza and Prince Naseem Hamed...... They were all brilliant at drawing attention to themselves. I think it's the 5 losses that seems to be a mental block for me ....... and for that individual to be considered one of if not the best athlete of All-Time....
