As is your hit in response is not at all surprising. BTW, I was not referring to you individually when I said that Christians on this board have no critical thinking skills and that their belief is blind. But, to the main point: Bigotry. A small sampling of online dictionaries definition of what you accuse me of. I do not have a strong, obstinate, unreasonable attachment to a belief, opinion or faction, or stubborn and complete intolerance or dislike of another person that believes differently than I do.I do object to someone who believes differently than I do, who tries to change my beliefs to conform to their belief.I never ask anyone if they believe in god, since I really don't want to know and don't care. People tell me what they believe without any prompting. And if I don't agree with them, they get pi$$y. And I generally state my desire to not be proselytized to. Though that doesn't seem to be very effective. Your posts, in this thread and others, can be characterized as confrontational, having a strong, unreasonable attachment to an opinion and a high degree of intolerance towards someone who believes differently and will not agree with your viewpoint. When things become accusatory, I generally go elsewhere. But I felt this instance needed to be commented on. Now, live long and prosper, go outside and enjoy the natural world around us all. Backpedaling doesn't turn the table, and the straw man isn't doing you any favors, but I can appreciate the desperation. I believe you moved the goalposts when you introduced bigotry into the discussion.

My point is, you are an outspoken bigot, and I noticed it and pointed it out. Did you not comprehend my fairly politically correct description of your intolerance of my different opinion? "Your posts, in this thread and others, can be characterized as confrontational, having a strong, unreasonable attachment to an opinion and a high degree of intolerance towards someone who believes differently and will not agree with your viewpoint."

Nope, you introduced bigotry: Nope, you did that: "But the Christians on this board won't see it, won't understand it. No critical thinking skills, just blind belief in their 'one true god'." Round and round and round we go. Try something different, like pointing out how you were referring only to the Christians on this board. Oh wait, you excluded me after the fact. Oh well. I tried. I guess you're left with your accusation that I'm intolerant of bigotry, and I'm good with that.

I've heard of people who hand them to the bellboy and ask that he remove this trash during their stay. I've also heard of hotels/motels that refuse to allow religious books in their rooms.
I've often wondered: Who is the legal owner of a Bible in a hotel room. If the hotel reluctantly accepted it, does it belong to the hotel? Does it still belong to the donor? Is it considered abandoned property and may be taken by the hotel guest? Is it legally trash that is free to be discarded? In other words, if I do any of the options proposed by the O.P., am I defacing someone else's property?
Best I can tell, the Gideons are only too happy if someone actually takes one of the Bibles they leave in hotels/motels. I'm sure they don't want folks to toss them, but they absolutely do not deny their whole goal is to get more Bibles into people's hands. So.I wouldn't see a problem if someone wanted to take one. The motel doesn't pay for them, so I don't think they would mind if someone took them. I ignore them...I grew up around Bible...probably have a couple lying about the house as I sit here writing. I'm not offended by their existence...just a book of ancient myths and actually some pretty good guidance to live by if you sift the wheat from the chaff.

And I am done with this 'round and round' that you have perpetuated. It's a special skill (the round and round thing). Just to be clear, I think your comment was an over simplification, and as I am personally called out by it and feel it mis-catergorises me, I was going to say something. Having said that, given *most* Christians on this board, it's a reasonable statement, if a bit generalised. For that reason alone it does not construe bigotry as far as I can tell.

You got that right, the "special skill " thing! Had I thought a bit more, I would have said 'most' or 'some', in relation to this board. I actually have a few friends that are believers, albeit more on the spiritual side, and we agree to disagree. But I have way more experience with the kind that will not agree to disagree, and I generally have to walk away. I live in what is called the "buckle of the Bible Belt" and I'm outnumbered. And they are, most assuredly, bigoted against anyone who doesn't believe EXACTLY what they believe, and they are aggressive with it. I keep a very low profile in my community. Some years ago, a local politician had an article in the newspaper about why she deserved everyone's vote, because she was a Christian. I send in a letter to the editor, pointing out that she was crossing the line of the separation of church and state. They published it, with my name and address attached (newspaper policy). It wasn't hard for anyone to find my phone number, either. I got hate mail and phone calls, telling me I was going to Hell. There were even a few verbal death threats (nothing in writing). I hadn't said anything about me being an agnostic, just commented that she shouldn't campaign using her religion. So, after about a week of harassment, it finally stopped, and I was able to stand down the defensive missiles. And after that, I kept my opinions to myself. I would say their actions and words would qualify as bigotry.

Yeah, I think it is sad, and I alluded to it in the who always thinks they are right thread, Religion tends to attract people who are right no matter what, and right in the eyes of the lord. It makes for a piss poor combination.

... [The Bible is ] actually some pretty good guidance to live by if you sift the wheat from the chaff. Especially Psalms 137:9 - "Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones." New World Translation: "Happy will be the one who seizes your children And dashes them against the rocks." How about slavery? How about the death penalty for adultery? How about mauling children for mocking a bald man? Or killing the world's population with a flood? You call it "sifting the wheat from the chaff"; I call it "cherry-picking".

Cherry picking, reading it and applying some common sense...leaving out that which is obvious nonsense and heeding that which makes sense. Same thing applies to lots of things. Politics, what your dad taught you, what society thinks is right. Everyone's gotta sift through it and pull out what seems right.

What you deem to be “obvious nonsense” others may consider “that which makes sense”. Take, for example, Exodus 31:14. Obvious nonsense, you say? Tell that to the late Thomas Aikenhead or the late Edward Wightman.
Slavery: wheat or chaff? Ask Kunta Kinte.
We all have our own set of morals learned from instinct, family, society, etc. My morals, while similar, are probably not identical to yours. Anything in the Bible that does not meet your pre-determined morals, you deem “obvious nonsense”. So why bother. It’s just a book of someone else’s morals. If the Bible is the word of Jehovah, then why are there so many versions? And why didn't Yahweh write it in Esperanto?

Lived in a motel with my family for a couple of years back in the 90s when. I was ~12. (That's when I learned there are a lot more people living in motels than you would think.) Anyway, there was a biker or trucker (can't remember which) who'd rent a room to bang hookers. He'd always through the Bible outside first thing when he went into a room.

I usually just rip out a couple of pages from Leviticus 18 and 20 and then put it back where I found it.
