Went to see UMass take on Sienna today. It was a tight game throughout, but UMass pulled away late with some crisp ball movement and timely stops. It was fun to see Frank Martin coach in person. He replaced Cohen early in the game, and I assumed it was because he wasn't doing enough on the boards. Sure enough when Cohen was reinserted and Sienna kept getting offensive boards, Martin laid into him, and I mean really gave it to him as they went to timeout. "GRAB ONE REBOUND," getting in Cohen's face, "JUST ONE REBOUND!!!" Overall, the team played good defense and moved the ball well, with a standout game from Matt Cross who led the team in scoring and just seemed to be everywhere on the court on both ends. Always good to see the home team win, and my son got to shoot hoops on the court after the game along with the other CYO league kids, so it was a fun day all around. My wife was surprised at the amount of Marcus Camby merch they still sell at these games, but I pointed out UMass Basketball has literally nothing else to hang its hat on in the last nearly 30 years, so yeah. (As an aside, it occurred to me today that I'm at the age where things that I think were 20 years ago were actually 30 years ago now. Oof.) Despite having to officially vacate their 1996 Final Four appearance (due to Camby getting improper benefits from a booster) and return the trophy, money and banner to the NCAA, the school had their own Final Four banner printed which hangs in the Mullins Center to this day. Otherwise, it would be easy for longtime fans to start thinking those glory years were all just a dream. Lou Roe! Damn right. Those were the years, my friend. UMass kept going deeper in the tournament under Calipari with Roe eventually going to the Elite Eight and then Camby going to the Final Four. Then Camby bolted for the NBA, and so did Cal, and UMass has been a wasteland ever since. They were at least respectable for a couple years under Travis Ford, but nothing like those days. I like what I'm seeing this year, though. They aren't a national power, but Martin has them playing hard and getting positive results so far.

Still a D1 school. There's been more than a few D1 teams playing D2 or even D3 teams
What conference do they play in? Never heard of them before today. Atlantic Sun. They just moved up from D2 two years ago. They were a respectable 18-15 last season I don't have an issue with any D1 school playing another, even if it is a mismatch. And this was a huge boost to Queens. Meanwhile, both Gonzaga and San Diego State played two D2 schools and happily put it in the win column

There was another with a Hispanic last name, too lazy to look him up

So was Dana Dingle. They had two great guards who ended up playing for the Puerto Rican national team, Carmelo Travieso and Edgar Padilla. Of course 'great' may be overstating things, you'll have to excuse my bias when talking UMass sports.

I like Coach Cal's UMass teams even though they pounded Bonaventure every time

St. Bonaventure pounds VCU, 89-78 in Richmond. Hmmmm. Bonnies are 10-3. Only losses were a bad game against Canisius and losses to Auburn (#25 in AP, #10 at KenPom) and to Florida Atlantic (#17 in AP, #20 at KenPom). Beware the Bonnies. I'm still amazed no one has hired Coach Mark Schmidt away. He's won 292 games in Olean. The coach before won 24 in four years. Before that was "Weldergate". A JC was allowed to play even though his credits came from a welding school. The NCAA forfeited the games and barred SBU from the A-10 tourney. They rest off the team quit with games to play. The coach, the athletic director and the school president all resigned. The chairman of the board killed himself over Weldergate. A lot of people thought it was time to quit the A-10 and joined the Metro Atlantic or Northeast. Schmidt has done a hell of a job resurrecting what was one of the biggest little schools in CBB. The school doesn't have much going for it. A Franciscan college in a tiny, nearly all white, rural town. Recruiters have to compete against NYC, Philly, Pittsburgh, Washington, Chicago and St. Louis in the A10

I was honestly a bit worried about my Boilers traveling to Maryland on Tuesday. They took care of business.
I watched both Big Ten games yesterday, Ohio State/Rutgers was a good one. Rutgers kept it close the entire time and just couldn't seem to ever take the lead when they had their chances. Nebraska is an interesting team - definitely will be a tournament team come March, and would be a good dark horse pick to win the Big Ten.

I'll eat my hat if Purdue doesn't win the B10. probably by three games. Illinois was the only team that I thought could hang with them but they lost their best player, Terrence Shannon, to a rape charge.
Seems odd not to see Nebraska in the B10 basement. Probably the team from a power conference with the worst history. Seven NCAA bids, 0-7 record. Two NCAA bids since 1994.

Yeah, obviously Purdue is a massive favorite, but they've already got a loss and I think they will hit 3-4 losses in conference play even being the best team. I wouldn't bet on it either, but if someone other than Purdue is going to win it, think Nebraska has as good a chance as anyone else without Shannon at Illinois. Although, Illinois seemed to fair pretty well without Shannon last game. Tomorrow should still be a fun game, but not sure Illinois has enough to take Purdue down at home.

I've seen the Makers 4-5 times already. Zach Edey isn't the lumbering lump he was last year, he's got some moves now. He also draws about 250 fouls a game and is a good FT shooter. And their guard play is exceptional. Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer and Lance Jones are quality. And Edey's backup, Will Berg, can play. The only thing I'd be worried about is if the B10 is a joke. I've seen too many team run up gaudy records in weak conference and stumble in March. Gonzaga writes the book on it. The 2014-15 Kentucky team is another. Went into the tourney undefeated with nine future NBA players. But ran over a pathetic SEC. And I think it cost them in March when they had to play good teams. Might be a good thing that Purdue has a loss, that undefeated season stuff is an albatross.

Even if the Big Ten sucks, their non-conference was absolutely loaded - Alabama, Gonzaga, Marquette, Arizona, Tennessee. Hopefully they don't get lulled into a false sense of security, but given they were on the wrong end of one of the biggest upsets of all-time with essentially the same squad as last year, if that happens, it's on them

That was a wake up call
Interesting game tonight, Colorado v. Arizona. Tad Boyle had done a nice job in Colorado, a school with little hoop pedigree. And the Wildcats coming off a gruesome loss to a lousy Stanford

That is an interesting one! Arizona are bigger favorites than I would have expected, Colorado is respectable. I think Arizona comes back and dominates though

Arizona is the only real threat in that conference. Colorado, Utah and Oregon are good but not to be a Final Four. USC might get their shit together if LBJ Jr. plays well. UCLA is already 6-8 with a loss to Cal State Northridge in Pauley. Ouch

You never really know thought who is going to get hot and go on a run. 2022 we had about as blue-blood as it can get - Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, and Villanova. 2023, Uconn with Miami, FAU, and SDSU. Last year's tournament was an absolete mess, and early on some of these upsets lean towards seeing a repeat of that. I'm personally hoping this year's tournament is a bit more chalk

Watched the Arizona game last night, and it was over in the first 3 minutes. Most entertaining part was Bill Walton and Frank Caliendo on the broadcast. Other games of note last night, James Madison remains undefeated and Memphis almost blows a big lead but holds on
Tonight a big one for my Boilers which I'll obviously be watching closely, 10.5 point favorites is a pretty big line, but playing at Mackey is really tough. Also looking forward to Uconn/Butler earlier in the evening. At Butler, I think this one has the potential for an upset. Uconn is a very good team, but Butler are no pushovers and they can score - Hinkle is gonna be rocking. The line opened at 6.5 and moved down to 5.5, so people definitely think it's a possibility.

The Big East is stacked this year. 2nd toughest conference to the BXII. Every team in the East is a threat, except DePaul And Georgetown. Kyle Neptune seems to have fixed things after that horror show in the Philly Big Five. UConn, Crieghton or Marquette could win it all.
The XII is ridiculous. Houston, Baylor, Kansas, Texas. The two teams that were predicted to finish at the bottom, Cincinnati and BYU are 11-2 and 12-1. Oklahoma was supposed to be in the lower half but are 12-1. The only crap team is West Virginia, who got kneecapped by Bob Huggins right before the season started.

We'll see - I'm not sold on the Big 12 just being dominant. Houston has played literally nobody, so will need to see what they do against decent teams. Texas is more or less the same, they played all cupcakes and 2 real teams, and lost both of those games handily. Baylor schedule wise, definitely more than those 2 teams as they have some ok wins, but also losses against probably the 2 most talented teams they've faced. Kansas, absolutely for real, their resume is loaded already.

Providence down at the half vs Creighton.
