Is it just me or are the big schools really working hard to find cupcakes to blowout these days? More and more I feel I'm looking at the scores and I've never heard of some of these schools. Like even the bottom rung of the one bid conferences might pull an upset so you have to dig up Chicken Bucket Technical Community College for an easy blowout. There's been a lot of CBB commentators ripping on the weak non-conference slate this year. Big school will always schedule some cupcakes. You want to have some easy games to see how your deep bench players do. But you also need to play real teams with real players. Outside of the tournaments, Maui Invitational, Battle for Atlantis et al, there were few simple head to head matchups. Maybe it's because the big schools see no percentage in it anymore. The Selection Committee weighs heavily on the "bad loss, good win" principle. Mighty Bigga U beats Teeny Tech by 50, big fat soggy deal. Teeny Tech wins by two, it will be an albatross come Selection Sunday.

No change at Louisville www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/39168605/ad-struggling-louisville-says-kenny-payne-stayingCardinals now 9-35 in the last season and half. I've seen blue blood programs fall, UNLV and Georgetown, but never one this far. A program that has been great since the 60's with players like Wes Unseld, Butch Beard, Junior Bridgeman, Darrell Griffith, etc. How bad did Rick Pitino and Chris Beard fuck things up? From what I've read, they will stick with Payne until the end of the season and go after Dusty May from Florida Atlantic. But will May want to go. They might not win another game this year. One game with a chance of winning, a home game against equally disastrous Notre Dame. Shame, I always kind of liked Louisville

Back in the day, everyone made fun of Georgetown blowing out St Leo's. Now it feels like every team has three of those. San Diego State recently played the University of St Katherine's. That shcool opened in 2010. In May of 2013 it had it's first commencement; one student graduated. It now has an enrollment of 232 students. Among the other schools that St Katherine's faces this year: Justice College, SAGU American Indian College, Stanton University, CETYS Universidad (Mexico), Benedictine University Mesa, and the University of Antelope Valley. The schools St Katherine's played before and after San Diego State: Thompson Rivers University (Canada) and Life Pacific University. Largest school they play other than SDSU: Cal State-Bakersfield. They are 9-4 . . . so they are a power versus schools with fewer than 1000 students, I guess.

If you can't find someone to beat in there, then you should consider dropping the program

How did those games look? What is Bill Walton going to do next year? I didn't watch. I was going to watch the USC game to see Little LeBron but forgot
Maybe Walton can convince Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kruetzman to reform the Grateful Dead with BW replacing Jerry Garcia?

Can't believe Joey Meyer (RIP) was 74. Says how old I've become.

Can't believe Joey Meyer (RIP) was 74. Says how old I've become. I can remember when he took over DePaul from Daddy
I remember DePaul in the late 70's. Every year, they would go into the tournament with one or two losses. Get a #1 seed. And lose their first game. They made the Final Four one year (the Magic/Bird Final Four) but every other year they would lose to some school that barely made the tournament.

Went to see UMass take on Sienna today. It was a tight game throughout, but UMass pulled away late with some crisp ball movement and timely stops. It was fun to see Frank Martin coach in person. He replaced Cohen early in the game, and I assumed it was because he wasn't doing enough on the boards. Sure enough when Cohen was reinserted and Sienna kept getting offensive boards, Martin laid into him, and I mean really gave it to him as they went to timeout. "GRAB ONE REBOUND," getting in Cohen's face, "JUST ONE REBOUND!!!"
Overall, the team played good defense and moved the ball well, with a standout game from Matt Cross who led the team in scoring and just seemed to be everywhere on the court on both ends. Always good to see the home team win, and my son got to shoot hoops on the court after the game along with the other CYO league kids, so it was a fun day all around.
My wife was surprised at the amount of Marcus Camby merch they still sell at these games, but I pointed out UMass Basketball has literally nothing else to hang its hat on in the last nearly 30 years, so yeah. (As an aside, it occurred to me today that I'm at the age where things that I think were 20 years ago were actually 30 years ago now. Oof.) Despite having to officially vacate their 1996 Final Four appearance (due to Camby getting improper benefits from a booster) and return the trophy, money and banner to the NCAA, the school had their own Final Four banner printed which hangs in the Mullins Center to this day. Otherwise, it would be easy for longtime fans to start thinking those glory years were all just a dream.

UMass-Temple was a great rivalry, for a few years.

A few (and yes, I have one), but nothing compared to the Camby stuff. To be fair, Julius didn't do for the program what Camby did. That 95-96 team beat Tim Duncan. They beat the Kentucky team that ended up winning the title (though they lost the Final Four rematch). They beat eight ranked teams; four in the top ten, three in the top five. It was a hell of a season that ended up in a Final Four trip that no longer exists officially. Erving has his numbered retired and a statue outside of the building, but UMass was a national power when Camby was here.
