Apparently the Jays are making some noise for Soto as well. Ken Rosenthal is saying they are closer to what the Padres are looking for than the Yankees are. Soto has one year before full free agency, right? Yes, so it won't be the same haul that the Padres had to give up to get him in the first place. Just have to create as much of a bidding war as possible, but that won't happen until Ohtani signs (hopefully).

Yeah, but it's always tricky when the team basically publicly announces that a guy is available, particularly one of Soto's stature. The Indians just had this with Francisco Lindor before his walk year - they literally announced that he would get traded....and then had the audacity to act shocked when teams weren't willing to pony up their top prospects for a rental. Then the Mets swooped in and sent in Andres Gimenez (who inexplicably got MVP votes last year, which is insane), bust Amed Rosario, and I don't even remember who else. You have to wonder if the Padres kept this a bit quieter, maybe the Yankees wouldn't be playing as much hardball with their prospects.

Hell has frozen over. Yankees and Red Sox made trade. Shades of Dec. 26, 1919.

Hell has frozen over. Yankees and Red Sox made trade. Sometime before the 1947 season, Yanks owner Dan Topping got Sox owner Tom Yawkey drunk and got him to agree to a straight up trade
Joe DiMaggio for Ted Williams
The respective GM's nixed the deal that morning. It would have been a disaster for the Sox as the Yankees would have got nine more years from the Splinter than the got from The Clipper. AL pitchers would have soiled themselves, having to face Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle in the same lineup

The GM's overruled their bosses? It was a trade made from beaucoup bottles of scotch. When sober, both owners seen the light. The fans is Boston and NYC would have screamed bloody murder. But those 50's Yankees with Williams. He hit .388 in 1958 with Dick Gernert hitting behind him. What would he have done with Mantle or Berra?
If the trade had gone through, the Yankees outfield in 1960 would have been
LF - Ted Williams CF - Mickey Mantle RF - Roger Maris
Ouch. Yeah, Maris wasn't a HOFer and, in the long run, no Teddy Ballgame or The Mick. But he was playing as well as them in 1960. And Williams had a great age 41 season but only played 113 games. The Yanks had Yogi Berra to fill in. Best OF ever?

On March 22nd, 1972, the Yankees dealt Danny Cater to the Red Sox for Sparky Lyle. Sparky would go on to win three pennants, an AL Cy Young award and two World Series titles in the Bronx.

It would be amazing if he picked Kansas City and signed a team friendly deal. Like 5 years, $50m. "I just want to live in a quiet part of the country and play baseball."

Soto to the Yankees is cruising towards becoming a reality, with unconfirmed reports coming out of the winter meetings saying the Pads and Yankees are "just sorting out details." Pitching prospects Michael King and Drew Thorpe are heading to SD (along with "2 other prospects") with Trent Grisham accompanying his friend Juan en route to the east coast.

Meh. Only way I could see that one is if he's signed on co-ownership of the franchise... which isn't inconceivable of course, yet highly doubtful.

What an awful last 12 months it has been for the Padres. As always, everything turns to shit with this franchise.

What an awful last 12 months it has been for the Padres. As always, everything turns to shit with this franchise. They should change their logo from the "Swinging Friar" to Icarus. They flew too high and melted. I can't blame ownership. It couldn't have been fun to see the Dodgers finish 25 games ahead of you and know this is how it will be for the next 20 years. If I was the owner, I would have gone the "Astros Route". Sell anything of value, lose 110+ for three years, but stockpile young talent and have quality young players and a minuscule payroll. That gives you truckloads of money to throw at free agents to fill gaps. Worked for Houston, worked for Texas, working for Baltimore. Oakland/Vegas is trying it but the draft lottery boned them hard.
Seen reports that the Pads actually made out in this trade. They (supposedly) got a ton of talent for a player who was walking after 2024. But San Diego gave up a ton of talent to get Soto. CJ Abrams and MacKenzie Gore are already proven players (numbers will get better) and the best prospect, Robert Hassell, hasn't hit DC yet.
112 days to Opening Day!
