RIP Willie Hernandez, who died today at the age of 69 following a battle with a heart ailment. A stalwart on the '84 Tigers champion team, Hernandez is one of 10 pitchers to capture a Cy Young Award and an MVP in the same season.

Chatter already about the low seeds having the stronger Octobers. MLB unofficially, officially says it's still early - aka they're well aware, yet want more sample size, 2-3 more playoffs to see if 162 games still matters for 100 win division winner or not. Ghost wins is an idea - put a division winner up 1-0 in a series to start. Stark, yet we're playing 6 nights a week from April for something still yes? 1 home game max is another idea for lower seed... likely a no-go since owners like money & owners run the sport. The best way is probably just go back to 4 divisions & 4 teams with home field & any/all advantages they can dream up. The best way would be for 100 win teams to play like 100 win teams in the playoffs. Why does the league have to stack the deck for these team that (usually) have bloated payrolls?

I think that's a fair stance. You're going to have lower seeded teams winning more titles as you continue to expand the playoffs because that's the nature of the sport. The playoffs are about matchups and performing under pressure, it isn't the lower seed's fault the big boys couldn't handle the moment.

All this nonsense whenever the Braves and Dodgers lose is such crybaby bullshit. If the "best" team is supposed to win every year, then why even have the playoffs? It's ridiculous. Perform, or fuck off.

Cardinals signing SP Kyle Gibson to a 1 year $12 million deal with club option.
They also signed SP Lance Lynn the other day to a 1 year $10 million deal with a club option.
The StL rotation now will include 2023 leader in runs allowed (Mikolas), hits allowed (Gibson), and home runs allowed (Lynn).
These are not the signings Cardinals fans were hoping.

Yeah, but the Cardinals rotation was brutal last year so they need bodies. Any one of these guys can put together a strong season and if 2 of them do so, you have something to build upon. Nola coming off the board was a big blow though, I kinda figured St. Louis would go all in on him. He seemed like a perfect fit.

Both are in the mix on Sonny Gray as well. The Cards need bodies yes but those aren't exactly the names the fanbase had hoped for with guys like Snell, Montgomery, Gray still out there. As well as the Japanese pitcher. My dad is less than thrilled with these signings as he figures this is John Mozeliak once again promising a big splash to fix the rotation only to be shopping in the bargain bin. If they wanted to bring a former Cardinal back Wacha would have been the better target. Had the Cards just needed depth at SP I think these moves would be viewed differently but they need top of the rotation level guys and imo multiple.

I’m pretty sure they’ll be all in on Snell and Gray, but those guys aren’t signing until Yamamoto signs as he’ll be setting the market in all likelihood. Yeah, you want top of the rotation guys, but you still need to fill out a roster and these guys are quality arms and the Cardinals have a great track record of maximizing guys like this.

Cards reportedly land Sonny Gray on a 3-year, $75m contract. I'm not a huge Gray fan, but he should be a good fit in St. Louis, assuming they can right the ship a bit. This was definitely a move they needed to make, and Gray cashes in on what was an up year for him.

Levi Walker, was he Creek Nation, Cherokee, or Yuchi? Chippawa, I think
I always thought that he wasn't a real Native, like Chief Jay Strongbow or Iron Eyes Cody

Jays still, somehow, in the Ohtani sweepstakes. I still say back the Brinks truck up, they'll make half of it back in a week via merch.
Andre Dawson meanwhile, mails the HOF, says he wants to change his cap from Expos to Cubs. I wonder if he's afraid 100yrs from now ppl having to explain who the Expos were.

Apparently the Jays are making some noise for Soto as well. Ken Rosenthal is saying they are closer to what the Padres are looking for than the Yankees are.

He'd be ideal, a lefty youthful power bat in between Bichette & Vladdy. Relying on Belt & Varsho for balance isn't going to cut it in the AL East.

Soto has one year before full free agency, right?
