What an awful last 12 months it has been for the Padres. As always, everything turns to shit with this franchise. They should change their logo from the "Swinging Friar" to Icarus. They flew too high and melted. I can't blame ownership. It couldn't have been fun to see the Dodgers finish 25 games ahead of you and know this is how it will be for the next 20 years. If I was the owner, I would have gone the "Astros Route". Sell anything of value, lose 110+ for three years, but stockpile young talent and have quality young players and a minuscule payroll. That gives you truckloads of money to throw at free agents to fill gaps. Worked for Houston, worked for Texas, working for Baltimore. Oakland/Vegas is trying it but the draft lottery boned them hard.
Seen reports that the Pads actually made out in this trade. They (supposedly) got a ton of talent for a player who was walking after 2024. But San Diego gave up a ton of talent to get Soto. CJ Abrams and MacKenzie Gore are already proven players (numbers will get better) and the best prospect, Robert Hassell, hasn't hit DC yet.
112 days to Opening Day!
Also a warning for the likes of the Blue Jays - loading up on young bats to print WS tickets is not guaranteed, let alone winning a playoff round.

Soto to the Yankees, because, of course. Well, at least he's not an a-hole, neither is Judge, so at least we've that in the universe. This move doesn't make them 100 game winners automatically either - the Padres will attest.

Yeah, they went the "pack the park" route, which did happen. They could actually afford to go the other way, though, if they care about attendance, because they never have poor attendance - - people just want to be outside in great weather and watch a game, whether they are crappy or not. But now they can't really go that way because of the huge and long contracts that they gave to Machado, Darvish, and Boegarts. Getting rid of Grisham was a plus, and there's talk that they may be able to get out from under Cronenworth's deal with a trade as well, but those other contracts are unmovable. The one thing Prellar does well, though, is draft, and the minors have already moved up pretty significantly since gutting it for Soto (James Wood is amazing to look at, but we'll see if he can hit major league pitching - - he's a part of what the Nationals got as well). In the end, though, the Padres are the franchise in the NFL where people buy the "2020 Wild Card Champions" shirts because they don't have anything else to celebrate (hello, Browns). The Soto years peaked with a goose on the field and a second round series win over Big Brother.

I mean, I guess, insofar as they now have warm bodies. Michael King is fine, but he's a swingman. Drew Thorpe is promising but he has never pitched above AA. Yeah, Soto was in his walk year, but this is what happens EVERY TIME when teams openly say they're going to trade someone. You kill the return value because teams know you want to unload. It's fucking negotiating tactics 101. My interns know this. Apparently AJ Preller doesn't. Theoretically, they could have gotten at least a higher ceiling guy if they held onto him and dumped him at the deadline to a team teetering on the brink that was willing to deal their top prospect for him. Look at what the Astros gave up for Verlander, and the Rangers for Scherzer (granted with one additional year of control and the Mets eating a huge chunk of salary, but still).

As often as loading up on young talent works it can easily also fail. Only takes 1 injury to a pitcher for their entire career trajectory to tailspin. Its why smart teams just load up on pitchers with the expectation that 75% will likely fail. If they don't then every team always needs pitching so they can be traded for missing bats. Its sad to see how many young promising pitchers over the years careers took hits. From a Braves perspective Mike Soroka and now Kyle Wright both top prospects that had great years only to get hurt and cut or traded. Same might be said about Ian Anderson as he will hopefully return next year. Its such a crap shoot. Meanwhile Spencer Strider was never a top prospect and came outta nowhere.

I just don’t get the Red Sox organization. The Verdugo trade I think many saw coming. But if you’re gonna trade him to the Yankees it should have been a great offer. Not 3 unknown prospects. Plus it’s not like the Yankees are known for developing home grown stars. Has any of their prospects that they’ve traded away ever gone on to have big careers?
Also, they actually have a pretty decent outfielder with young players. What they desperately need is starting pitching. Just now I saw they traded for another OF, Tyler O’Neil, from the Cardinals. Why? If you wanted more depth just re-sign Adam DuVall. Any trades they should be making right now are for legit starting pitchers.

This sounds cool as Hell www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39106980/mlb-feature-top-prospects-spring-training-gamesIt would be a part of a Spring Training double header, the two teams top prospects, and prospects only, playing each other. It could become a tournament if this is successful. I never watch Spring Training games because there's no interest or me in seeing the veterans. And by the time the rookies get in, the TV coverage has switched in inane interviews. I know what Ronald Acuna and Rafael Devers can do, I want to see the new faces. " Already MLB is planning to increase its coverage of the minor leagues on its app and digitally." My god, MLB is growing a brain. Having strong Minor League teams instead of just minor league training complexes is beneficial to the game. Historically, the stronger the minors were, the better the majors did.

This is a good thing, and I'll give you credit, this is something you have been clamoring for for years now. Minor league games are fun! They're also a fraction of the price of going to an MLB game, so if you have little kids who barely know what planet they're on, they don't care if they're seeing the New York Yankees or the Staten Island Yankees. Brooklyn Cyclones games at Keyspan Park (or whatever the fuck Maimonedes it's called now) are great. The other part is what you're alluding to about spring training games. There is something indescribably satisfying about watching these kids develop and morph into big leaguers. You become proud of them in a way. Maybe that's just me getting older, but it's really something when it works out.

I guess so, yet teams play their prospects in spring how they'd project them in their own franchise lineups around starters they'd be teammates with. Part of that is proper reps, not a showcase where someone might be batting 9th for a party.

Part of that is proper reps, not a showcase where someone might be batting 9th for a party. I would think it would mean more at bats and more fan recognition. Prospects now to fight for AB's with stars, role players, scrubs and "why is he here again?" players. And you have watched enough spring training games to know how the broadcasts work. The first 1-3 innings, when the regulars are in, everything is like a regular season game. When the stars are pulled, the announcers quit paying attention. Interviews, interviews, interviews. The owner, the GM, the managers down to the flunky who fills the toilet paper at the ballpark. Rarely are lineup changes mentioned, it's not as important as what the catcher had or breakfast. This format will focus the attention in the prospects and not just the top ones. You might get to see the next Spencer Strider

That's why I like to watch College baseball. I can remember thinking "Boy, that Clemens kid for Texas looks awfully good. The team that drafts him will get a steal!"

100 Days until opening Day Yeah!! Technically, March 28 is the real Opening Day like we'll all celebrate. But apparently, official Opening Day is a mere 92 days away. The Dodgers and Padres are playing 2 games, that count, in Seoul, Korea,, starting on March 20. So, what, they play 2 regular season games on the other side of the world, then come back for another week of spring training? I guess that makes sense.
