Legendary Director John Landis Trashes the Marvel Cinematic Universe
It's certainly hard to discount the enormous success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has released 15 hit movies over the past nine years with varying degrees of success, although none of their movies are considered total flops by any means. The MCU's latest movie, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, is both a critical hit (81% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a commercial hit ($823.3 million worldwide), much like most of the other MCU movies, but the franchise certainly has no shortage of detractors. One of those is legendary director John Landis, who bluntly stated that he's "bored shitless" with the franchise in a new interview. Here's what he had to say, when asked his thoughts about shared universe's as a whole, and why Wonder Woman was received so well.
"I'm just... truthfully, I'm bored shitless with the Marvel Universe now. All the superhero movies tend to be interchangeable, you always have these mass destruction of cities, and huge computer-generated extravaganzas, to the point where you could take a reel from any of the Marvel superhero movies, and put it any of the others, and nobody would notice. It's just, they're the same thing over and over again. But, I don't know, people are showing up. One of the reasons Wonder Woman has been received so well by the critics is that it doesn't destroy cities! Even the superhero stuff is on a very human scale, it's the gods! We're not seeing skyscrapers tumbling!"

Everybody has got the right to their opinion. I respectfully disagree.

Yeah, the guy who subjected the world to "The Blues Brothers 2000" should just keep his mouth shut.

All a little ironic considering 2 of his most famous films involved climaxes with mass destruction in a city (Blues Brothers, AWIL), he's quite happy to appear in super hero movies (Spiderman 2, Darkman) and has made 1 terrible franchise move (Beverley Hills Cop III) and made an awful attempt to start a franchise (Blues Brothers 2000).
I assume his main criticsism can be applied to all (but one) of the DCEU films as well
To be fair you could probably pull apart a lot directors filmographies like this. But frankly, over the last 20+ years he has made some real stinkers himself. But, as was mentioned, he's entitled to his opinion.

The Bond movies have had a formula for over fifty years and people don't give a shit about it.

His descriptions about mass destruction fit DC more than MCU.

No ¡Three Amigos! love? Aw.... Three Amigos is a guilty pleasure of mine. There's nothing guilty about my love of that film and honestly problem my favorite Chevy Chase performance. And my second-favorite Martin Short performance ( Innerspace is Short's best work in my opinion)

The Bond movies have had a formula for over fifty years and people don't give a shit about it. But what is that formula? I still wonder about that. Typically it's as follows: Cold opening. Stylized title sequence. Debriefing by M. Mission begins. Bond meets ally and Bond girl;sometimes combined into one character. Villain and their evil organization of strange looking bad guys are introduced. Their absurdly evil plan is explained. Bond fights them. Bond gets captured. Villain stupidly doesn't kill him. Bond escapes and defeats bad guys. Nails Bond girl with double entendre. The End.

That's mildly disappointing but, I'm not surprised. These days you could throw a stone in any direction and hit a senior citizen Hollywood director who hates superhero movies.

I'm not sure why we're supposed to care what he thinks. He's perfectly entitled to his opinion, of course. I can even see where he's coming from. But all he's really saying is that these movies aren't to his taste. Well, so what? No movie could ever appeal to everybody. I don't like martial arts movies, but I don't go around telling everyone about it, I just don't watch them. The only important question is whether there is enough of an audience that does enjoy these movies to justify making them. Judging by the box office and voting on the likes of RT, there's still millions of people who enjoy Marvel's product enough to pony up to see them - including me. That being so, of course Marvel is going to keep pumping them out. They won't even think of stopping for as long as the movies are profitable, why would they?

Its hypocritical because the same old folks who now whine about their being "too many superhero" movies used to go to multiple Westerns every year. Yet when OUR generation gets a predominant genre that has multiple entries every year, "its boring and annoying".

Spielberg is the only one I recall comparing the two genres, and not in the best light.

He is factually incorrect. I doubt he has even seen most of the MCU movies. Did I miss the scene in Ant-Man where a city was destroyed? That's just one example.
Like Atom(ica) Discord suggested, it just sounds like sour grapes to me.
