i am cautiously optimistic. Prometheus wasn't all it could've been but my big fear is that they've thrown the baby out with the bathwater in trying to pander to Aliens fans. i have more faith in Scott than that, but not the studio. I am also willing to give Ridley Scott the benefit of the doubt based on his past track record, he is well aware that he has left an inferior footnote to the Aliens mythology and maybe he will fight to get something great on film. I am all hope and little courage on this one, knowing the power of today's studio is for product because the films are controlled by investors who want maximum return. Watching the extra's on the making of 'Kingdom of Heaven' and seeing Ridley struggle against the studio exec to get the film he truly wanted in the final edit and mostly lost because the directors-cut of 'Kingdom of Heaven' is vastly superior, so much so,, that I got rid of the studio release. Compare this to the extra's on 'Blade Runner' where Ridley is constantly pushing the production schedule ever outward and the financiers were mostly accommodating till the end when they said, O.K. we need to release this film sometime.

Prometheus was crap. How do you screw up an Alien prequel? It should not have been that difficult. I think they need to scrap the prequel idea altogether and just make Alien movies. Maybe breathe some fresh life into the Alien vs. Predator films. Prometheus gets well received critics, becomes the highest grossed movie of the franchise, and was nominated for an Oscar. Really good for such a "crap" movie.

Prometheus spawned one of the biggest and longest threads that I have ever been on when it was first released, mostly because it was a blast to rip on how utterly stupid it was. Ridley Scott did make at least one great comedy, if you view it as an alien satire then the film takes on a whole new meaning. Personally, Ridley Scott- almost 80, should have just stepped back and let another Alien enthusiast director take the Alien franchise into another direction. Really thought that Prometheus established a terrible prologue for the new series and leads us to another brain-dead plot: Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant, which includes Walter, an android similar to David who, together with Elizabeth Shaw, was the sole survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition, find what they believe to be an uncharted paradise. It soon reveals itself to be a dangerous world inhabited by the original David and monstrous creatures that start to hunt them. Gee, the Predator movie with Aliens hunting them. That's it? No great inter-galactic space battles or raging civil war with Alien commando's kicking ass and taking names!!!!!!
The potential with the back story of the engineers gives it the possibility for an excellent sci-fi think piece. They won't go there, though, because Hollywood greed is going to try and milk the story-line for as long as possible. I'm sure it's been padded with a lot of boring, obvious CGI alien fight scenes. That said, I will probably still go see it, because I love the Alien franchise, and I'm hoping the special effects will make it worth seeing on the big screen. They tried that with Prometheus and people didn't exactly love it.

The fact that they tried to make it about the creation of mankind is one of the many problems it had. The movie was originally supposed to be about the crash landed ship in the first movie. And that's just one of its problems.

I also posted this in the 'Alien Covenant Reviews Out' thread, but the reviews are finally starting to come in now. It's now at 81% with 21 reviews at Rotten Tomatoes. The average rating and the percentage will hopefully go up, since the reviews from The Telegraph (5/5), The Independent (5/5), The Mirror (5/5), The Hollywood Reporter (rave review), Polygon (rave review) & Splashreport (A-) aren't included yet.

I wrote a poem after watching that prologue. Here goes... When movies go gay I stay away Someday I may see it But I'll never pay Apperently in the movie, you don't even know they are gay.

Everyone complains about cgi, but over half the movies made in the last 20 years would have been impossible without cgi. But no matter how good it looks, it's never good enough. I have more issues with poor writing and stupid plots and dialog.

cg alien at the end disappoints. kind of kills the tension. and the fact they put it in the trailer kind of kills the tension in that (very important) scene in the movie too. It sucks how they ruin things with trailers these days. I saw A:C yesterday and two scenes were completely ruined because of the trailer for me

What's pretty bad about trailers is that they sometimes put every funny line in a comedy movie in the trailer. The rest of the movie turns out to be a disappointment when all the good funny lines are already known (and there isn't really much else that's funny in the movie).

If they didn't show it in the trailer, you wouldn't all of a sudden be more scared were engaged, because you've already seen it in previous movies.

The "Alien" creature looks different in the new movie, though - very different. P.S. I say this because of the trailer - I haven't seen the movie yet.

Covenant was a good movie. Much better than Prometheus. If you hate Covenant it wont be for the same reasons you hated Prometheus. Covenant at once feels like a proper sequel to Prometheus and is a good fit in Alien franchise. It both goes forward to reach toward Alien and goes backward to reach for Prometheus.
For me the thing about Prometheus is that there are literally tons of plot holes and decisions made in the story that don't make sense.
Covenant on the other hand has an actual story, little to no plot holes, and the characters, while still making dumb decisions in some cases, still make some kind of sense given the fact that they are in incredibly chaotic, high stress situations.
I'm not giving the movies flaws a pass. There are flaws. But this is overall a much better, much more enjoyable, movie than Prometheus. Just for Fassbenders performance alone you should go see this movie.
