Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace.
I grew up on the original trilogy (wore out my original VHS set) and was really hyped to see the first prequel. I went on the late night opening with a group of friends and there was a big "to-do" by the theater. The manager even addressed the audience before the movie started. The film started to applause with the 20th Century Fox logo and "A long time ago..."
Roughly 2 hours later at the local Denny's restaurant (early A.M.) I was wondering what the heck just happened. It felt like a part of my childhood was destroyed.
I've recovered (even after the pathetic Clones and marginal Revenge) but don't hold the Star Wars films nearly as high as I used to. I have to admit that Rogue One was pretty good though. Force Awakens was okay but I don't think any new film will restore the awe that I held when I watched the Falcon maneuver through an asteroid belt with Star Destroyers in pursuit as in Empire back in the eighties.

War Horse. God that was fucking depressing. Not at all what the trailers advertised. I expected it to be a tearjerker but not a horse holocaust story. Might as well retitled it 'Seabiscuit's List'.

The Phantom Menace (words can't describe how big of a letdown this was. I figured it'd at least be decent but Lucas went full retard here. You never go full retard!)3/10
Indy 4 (Ford acted like he didn't even want to be there and was just collecting a fat check. Can't say I blame him since Spielberg shit the bed. Easily the Beard's worst directed film ever) 4/10
The Force Awakens (The newer characters were so lame. The bad guy was a little pussy and the plot was basically a re hash of New Hope. Wasn't a fan) 5/10
Avengers: Age of Ulton (after the damn good first one , I was expecting Whedon to up his game here and came away very disappointed . One critic called it a $250 million dollar pile of poo....I would have to agree here) 5/10
Interstellar (I freakin waited almost an hour in line to see this in IMAX and couldn't believe what an overlong/bloated mess of a movie this way. And Hathaway's "Love" monologue had me rolling my eyes all the way back in to my skull. Good lord, what was Nolan thinking leaving that crap in the script? Other than a few impressive space sequences, this film sucked ass) 4.5/10
and lastly , It Comes At Night (The teaser trailer was brilliant and left the theater baffled as the credits rolled. wasn't even a horror film and a lot of it was so too vague ) 4/10

The Dark Knight Rises (2012). "Let me down" might be too harsh but I was insanely hyped for it, and I ended up seeing it as quite easily the weakest of the trilogy.

Alien vs Predator
i had nearly Phantom Menace hype for this one. i'm an enormous fan of the first couple entries in both film franchises, as well as the crossovers in other media. i was aware of the script that had been floating around Hollywood for years but couldn't seem to get greenlit. when the film was finally announced i could barely believe it. and then when i viewed it i could barely believe it.

I have to agree with darkknightofgotham and FridayOnElmStreet Spider-Man 3 and Quantum of Solace. saw Spider-Man 3 in theaters and I felt as if Sam Raimi had decided to mock the audience for 2 plus hours. and Quantum of Solace, what a dull piece of shit after Casino Royale, I can barely get through it without falling asleep......also..........Forster is a fool for thinking his "Stranger than Fiction" animation designs were the right look for MI6 too cartoonish, playful, childishly sleek.

going more strictly by the topic, as in really high expectations and a movie not even coming close to that standard, it's been many years i would estimate since that's last happened simply because after you have seen plenty of movies you can generally get a pretty close estimate of how a movie will turn out prior to seeing it given cast/director/trailer/subject matter etc.
but with that said... sure, even today i sometimes over or under estimate movies but to do that to any wide margin, like the topic is basically saying, i can't really remember happening (i.e. expected a lot and ended up being very disappointed) off the top of my head.
but i will say since someone mentioned it... Quantum of Solace is a movie that definitely fell below expectations as while i did not expect it to be Casino Royale level i thought it would be better than it was.

Ghostbusters (1984)
I usually love those 1980s fun flicks, but this one left me cold for some reason. I can't explain why. Just rubbed me the wrong way, I guess.

The Dark Knight Rises (2012). "Let me down" might be too harsh but I was insanely hyped for it, and I ended up seeing it as quite easily the weakest of the trilogy. I'll go one step farther and say it was total garbage. Five years later I still can't believe how awful that film was compared to the first two installments. I was let down by several franchise films that year. TDKR, Prometheus, and Skyfall were all terrible entries to their respective franchises. I'd add The Bourne Legacy to the list, but I expected that to be as lousy as it was.
