Since following this thread I have been noticing how many movies have great unique hats. ... the hat seems to be part of the plot of the movie. The plot of Phantom Lady (1944) dir: Robert Siodmak, depends entirely on a bespoke milliner's hat which ought to have been unique but was illicitly copied. The opening frame is filled with this copy, and it is necessary to prove its existence to free a wrongly convicted man. A transitional movie between a thirties-style thriller and a full-blown Noir. Thomas Gpmez is almost cuddly and Elisha Cook jnr is still a creep and victim, but gets to cut loose as a hot jazz drummer. Franchot Tone is a dead weight as usual. Was he ever any good? The rather hideous hat and the fall-guy. If you think he looks depressed here, that was before he was framed for murder :

The nasty and vicious old lady hat style in The Forbidden Street aka Britannia Mews 1949. The actress is Dame Sybil Thorndike.
