I figured the implication was that if she was able to deflect his lightning back at him, she likely possessed a good deal of power by that point. And yet she couldn't beat him without that. She couldn't even find him. Like I said she had no clue where he was in the slightest, and couldn't have beaten him without him giving her the power to do so. What happened was he screwed up instead of her winning. It's an extremely weird ending if you're trying to establish her as a hero. How would she have even been able to find him? Besides, I can’t imagine any other character in the film doing what she did, do I’m not sure what exactly the problem is.

The only thing that matters is her best effort was to just wander around until she gave up. Wow, so impressive.
And do others being able to do it matter? The point is she couldn't beat him until he basically let her.
She couldn't find him, she couldn't beat him. What exactly is impressive about that?

Because if no one else was able to beat him, that would mean that Diana did humanity a pretty big favor. You’re making it sound like she beat him by accident.

I guess we have different definitions of the word “accident” then. When she had no chance at finding him and gave up, and then didn't have the power to beat him, yeah she got lucky he made several huge mistakes. It was like watching a team fumble three times in the fourth quarter to lose.

You just highlighted the problem.

It didn’t take that. It took her witnessing the death of Steve Trevor for her to unleash the power she needed to beat him.

And why did it take Steve anyway. She wanted to beat Ares from the start, so are you telling me she can't get the job done unless she has a boyfriend that gets hurt?
Captain America didn't beat Red Skull because Peggy got hurt. In fact he sacrificed her to beat Red Skull.

She had just become aware at that moment that she’s a God. That probably had something to do with it.

What upper hand? All she did was knock him back. And why did the lightening hurt him anyway when he's the one that gathered in the first. None of his powers are described or defined, he just has them. He's telekinetic, he has a force ghost, he can summon lightening but can't defend against it, he puts on armor for no damn reason. I mean seriously, that final battle is just random shit happening. He dies, just because.

Your complaint seems to be that the fight didn’t go on long enough for her upper hand to be made clear. Anyway, what do Ares’ powers have to do with anything?

He got knocked back once and was suddenly desperate? What? He didn't look desperate to me. And if he was desperate, it means she was capable of beating him without the lightning, so why the lightning?
No my complaints are that the entire scene has no basis. We don't understand his powers, we don't know why the lightening he just summoned would hurt him, we don't know why he puts on armor other than to look like his comicbook self, and Diana herself only won because he gave her the power to do so, we don't even know why she needed that power to beat him. And that's on top of the fact that she completely failed at finding him.
None of this final battle works. Why did he have force ghost powers?

What exactly, do you mean, why have the lightning? From a creative standpoint, it was obviously done to look cool and flashy. You’re blowing it out of proportion. As for Ares’ powers, what did we need to understand? He’s a God, hence why he can do all kinds of crazy things. They didn’t need to provide some long explanation for it.

I was hoping for a more conventional final fight. The God of war should be able to hold his own in a fist fight.

"to look cool and flashy" and for no other reason. I agree.
Regarding his powers, you have to establish what a character can and can't do. He's first introduced being able to appear in reflections in glass, but that has nothing to do with anything. He just can. It never comes up again. Then he's telekinetic, and puts on a set of armor just to look cool and for no other reason. Then he can summon lightening apparently, but can't defend himself from it? I guess? I mean they haven't told us what he can and can't do so I guess that kills him. Also how did Diana know it would kill him? She doesn't know anything about him.
How was Diana going to kill him without that?

I was hoping for a more conventional final fight. The God of war should be able to hold his own in a fist fight. There were so many ridiculous things about it. Why did he put on the armor other than just they wanted him to look like Ares? It never came in handy. And how did Diana know the lightening was going to kill him. She didn't even know he had that power, and she just saw him control it, so why would she think it would kill him?
The whole fight was really weird.
